The Fragrance Foundation’s annual April Luncheon at Cipriani 42 kicked-off awards season with this year’s finalists and a few 2025 award presentations prior to awards’ night on Thursday, June 5th at Lincoln Center.

This year, the first-ever TFF Leadership Award was presented to Dr. Joyce F. Brown, president of The Fashion Institute of Technology. Dr. Brown has not only been the longest serving president, but the most passionate educator advancing fragrance studies at a public college. Her vision and impact has left such an indelible mark on the industry that it was only fitting for The Fragrance Foundation to honor her legacy.

Dr. Joyce F. Brown is “one of the most transformative leaders in education today,” stated Fragrance Foundation President Linda G. Levy. “She has brought profound and visionary change to FIT’s programs, facilities, and initiatives over the course of her 27-year tenure as president. Her impact in advancing academic programs in fragrance, and bringing generations of talented graduates into the industry cannot be overstated.” Levy traced the long history of collaboration between TFF and FIT—including the landmark creation of the FIT #FragranceForwardTFF Scholarship.

Levy also shared that TFF has donated $27,000, reflective of the FIT President’s 27 years of leadership, to the Dr. Joyce F. Brown Legacy Fund. This ongoing fund will support the creation of a state-of-the-art science laboratory at FIT.

Winners of the first five 2025 Fragrance Foundation Awards were then announced along with finalists for all 19 categories to be awarded on June 5th, as well as the announcement that Daniela Andrier, master perfumer at Givaudan, would be the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Perfumer Honoree, and that Ralph Lauren will receive the 2025 Hall of Fame Award.

Justin Fenner received the Fragrance Editorial of the Year Award for his Robb Report article, The Man With the Golden Nose.

ELC Partners With the TUD Dresden University of Technology to Advance Scientific Research at the Intersection of Fragrance and Emotion

As consumer interest in the functional benefits of fragrance continues to accelerate, ELC will explore the role fragrance plays in evoking emotions.

The Estée Lauder Companies has announced a scientific research collaboration with the TUD Dresden University of Technology and their Smell & Taste Clinic, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, and Professor Thomas Hummel, a world-renowned leader in olfactory science, to further advance the company’s commitment to fragrance innovation and cutting-edge scientific research. The multi-year research collaboration aims to explore the neurological connections between fragrance and emotion. Findings from this research will be leveraged by ELC’s scientists and product developers to inform fragrance product and packaging innovation, consumer experiences, marketing claims, and more.

“Scents have long been associated with emotions and have a powerful connection to wellness,” said Sumit Bhasin, Senior Vice President, Corporate Fragrance Research & Development, Product Development and Innovation, ELC. “As consumer interest in the functional benefits of fragrance continues to accelerate, we are thrilled to be the first prestige beauty company to partner with Dr. Hummel and leading academic institution the TUD Dresden University of Technology on neuroscience research that will provide us with deeper insights into how fragrance plays a role in evoking nostalgia.”

This collaborative research spans a number of advanced measurement science approaches that assess the neuropathways associated with scent, psychometric and physiological analyses, brain imaging studies, and more to assess the correlation between scent and emotions. This will build upon existing studies the company has completed on the functional benefits of fragrance. Key learnings will be used at ELC’s R&D facilities worldwide, including its Paris-based Atelier, a new co-creation space opening in early 2025 exclusively focused on fragrance innovation and craftsmanship.

“There is a unique opportunity for academia and industry to partner together to explore the power of scent,” said Dr. Thomas Hummel, M.D., Prof. Dr. med., Interdisciplinary Center Smell and Taste, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, University Hospital Dresden. “We are proud to partner with a fragrance powerhouse like The Estée Lauder Companies with a proven commitment to science and the continuous advancement of innovation.”

Around the world, ELC is dedicated to cutting-edge science with multidisciplinary expertise ranging from basic science and advanced technologies to the intersections of physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. The company has more than 75 years of formulation authority and is deeply integrated into the scientific community, regularly presenting at leading events and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

TUD Dresden Univeristy of Technology, as a University of Excellence, is one of the leading and most dynamic research institutions in Germany. With around 8,300 members of staff and around 29,000 students in 17 Faculties, it is one of Europe’s largest technically-oriented universities. Founded in 1828, today it is a globally oriented, regionally anchored top university, developing innovative solutions for the world’s most pressing issues. In research and academic programs, the university unites the natural and engineering sciences with the humanities, social sciences and medicine. This wide range of disciplines is an outstanding feature that facilitates interdisciplinarity and transfer of science to society.

Pratt Institute has announced its Legends 2024, the annual scholarship benefit event that pays tribute to icons of art, design, and architecture. This noteworthy occasion, taking place on Thursday, October 10, serves as a crucial fundraiser for scholarships. Eighty percent of Pratt students rely on financial aid to pursue their educational aspirations, and contributions from events like Legends play a pivotal role in shaping the future of creative talent. This year, three distinguished individuals—award-winning filmmaker Charles Burnett, celebrated architect Toshiko Mori, and internationally renowned packaging designer Marc Rosen ’70—will be honored at Lavan Midtown in Manhattan. The glamorous gala begins at 6 PM with a cocktail reception, followed by a 7 PM dinner and awards ceremony.

Legends 2024 – A Night of Art, Design, and Inspiration

Legends 2024 promises an unforgettable evening filled with inspiring speeches, engaging discussions, and a lively celebration of art, design, and innovation. This event offers a unique chance to connect with fellow cultural institution supporters, network with Pratt alumni, and contribute to empowering the next generation of creative thinkers.

Legends 2024 will celebrate the achievements of these remarkable honorees and raise vital funds to provide scholarships that foster diversity within the Pratt community. Through the Legends scholarship program, Pratt is able to support and foster the inclusion of diverse artists, designers, architects, and creative thinkers.

“We are thrilled to celebrate Legends 2024 and honor the extraordinary contributions of Charles Burnett, Toshiko Mori, and Marc Rosen. Their groundbreaking work in film, architecture, and packaging design has set new standards and inspired countless individuals,” said Pratt President Frances Bronet. “This event not only recognizes their achievements but also raises essential funds to support our students’ education, ensuring the next generation of creative leaders can thrive and make a significant impact in the world.”

With every breath, we inhale information about the surroundings, about

people…in a way that engages with memory and emotion like no other

sense. – Sissel Tolaas, Norwegian Fragrance Researcher

The Costume Institute’s spring 2024 exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening

Fashion, on view through September 2nd, 2024, features approximately

250 garments and accessories that will be connected visually through nature, which

also serves as a metaphor for the transience of fashion. The show brings to life the

sensory capacities of these masterworks through a wide range of encounters: visitors

are invited to smell the aromatic histories of hats bearing floral motifs; to touch the

walls of galleries embossed with the embroidery of select garments; and to

experience—via the illusion technique known as Pepper’s ghost—how the “hobble skirt”

restricted women’s stride in the early 20th century. Punctuating the galleries is a

series of “sleeping beauties”—garments that can no longer be dressed on mannequins

due to their extreme fragility.

Norwegian Artist Sissel Tolaas and Symrise’s William Chaney examine archival pieces from The Met Costume Institute.

Renowned Norwegian fragrance researcher Sissel Tolaas spent years collecting scent

molecules from garments in the archive in partnership with Symrise’s William Chazey,

Senior Manager of Market Sample Analysis and Applied Research. Chazey supported

the examination of the attire showcased in the exhibit, aiding in the capture of lingering

scents retained by the garments. Tolaas is responsible for capturing scent scapes of

several dresses and of specific women. Denise Poiret, the wife and muse of Paul “King

of Fashion” Poiret, who drew the rose on the maison’s label, is one of them. Another is

the heiress and paradigm of chic Millicent Rogers; the traces of scent left on her

Schiaparelli dress have also been documented and are available for the visitor to sniff.

As part of its Green The Planet initiative, Origins celebrates the profound impact of trees on the lives of people with Rooted Voices — a new community-led, global campaign which recognizes the profound impact of trees on the lives of real people throughout the month of April.

As part of the month-long campaign, Origins will bring its Green The Planet initiative to life through a tree planting event in Oakland, California, with non-profit Planting Justice. The grassroots organization is led by frontline Black, Indigenous and Latino communities, with a mission to empower individuals impacted by mass incarceration and social inequities with the skills and resources needed to cultivate food sovereignty, economic justice and community healing. Origins has recently expanded the focus of Green the Planet to support the work of environmental justice organizations globally, accelerating urban forestry initiatives across the U.S. and expanding city project planting efforts throughout the world. The partnership with Planting Justice is supported by Origins’ Green The Planet, in partnership with its global non-profit partner One Tree Planted.

“Origins is committed to championing people and our planet which is why inclusive, community-centered approaches to reforestation efforts are critical to help restore ecosystems and address climate change,” said Amber Garrison, Global Brand President, Origins. “Through Green The Planet, we are not only investing in critical urban forestry initiatives, but we’re also investing in the environmental welfare of local communities for the long term.”

Funding from Origins’ Green The Planet will support the planting of a total of 250 fruit, nut, and native trees at Planting Justice’s new Aquaponics Incubator Farm located in Oakland’s Sobrante Park, a neighborhood which has one of the lowest canopy percentages in the entire County. Feedback and community surveys garnered from the neighborhood’s residents revealed a strong desire for more neighborhood tree cover and increased access to local and organic produce. Planting Justice’s cumulative work planting on 5-acres in Sobrante Park represents the largest investment in the creation of local green jobs and sustainable agriculture careers in the City of Oakland. Origins planting efforts will support one of the ways Planting Justice is expanding its impact and creating access to local jobs and livelihoods.

“Volunteer events create the understanding that the community itself has the power to change its living conditions, especially for those who have historically lacked access to trees, land and resources,” said Gavin Raders, Co-Founder, Planting Justice. “When youth and residents plant trees in their own homes and in their own communities, and with the support of volunteers, they not only bring more health and wellness to their families and neighbors, but they are forever connected to the land.”

Planting alongside Planting Justice staff, many of whom are formerly incarcerated, long-term Sobrante Park residents, Origins volunteers will help plant the first trees at the Aquaponics site. Once fully matured, the variety of fruit trees planted at the Aquaponics Incubator Farm will supply the East Oakland community with locally appropriate, nutrient dense, fresh and local produce. Additionally, the urban forest will provide a diverse array of benefits such as providing residents propagation material for rare, heirloom and climate-resilient tree crops and the creation of beauty and shade in an area that currently lacks green spaces.

Throughout the month, Origins will celebrate the profound impact of trees on the lives of real people through their global brand campaign, Rooted Voices.

Follow the campaign on Origins’ Instagram and TikTok and share your #RootedVoices story on social for anchance to have a tree planted in your name.

The Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) hosted their Sixteenth Annual Connoisseur’s Dinner, honoring Leonard A. Lauder, Ronald S. Lauder, William Lauder, Gary Lauder, Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer, and Jane Lauder in celebration of their historic $200 million gift to the ADDF, announced earlier this year.

The event, held at Sotheby’s in New York City, raised nearly $3 million, every dollar of which will go directly toward the innovative science that fuels the ADDF’s mission to accelerate the development of drugs to prevent, treat, and cure Alzheimer’s disease. The Lauders’ extraordinary gift ensures the ADDF will be able to continue our work until we have fulfilled our goal, ultimately changing the way the world ages.

Celebrated author and journalist Walter Isaacson presented the Lauder family with the Chairman’s Award. “Since Leonard and Ronald Lauder founded the ADDF 25 years ago, the family has shown an unmatched dedication to curing this devastating disease, infusing the Lauder spirit of innovation, quality, and excellence into the ADDF’s quest to identify and support the most promising research. It is an honor to recognize their efforts tonight.”

Leonard Lauder said, “Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t affect just one person, it impacts entire families. That is why it is so meaningful for my family to be honored by the ADDF, an organization my brother and I began because of our mother. She inspired us to do everything we could to fight and prevent this disease and I am proud to see my children and nieces pick up that torch.”

Ronald Lauder added, “We are proud of the impact the ADDF has made over the past two decades. The progress we are seeing in prevention, diagnostics, and drug development makes me confident the innovative research we support will continue to build momentum until we eradicate this disease for future generations.”

The ADDF’s Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer Dr. Howard Fillit remarked on the incredible progress of the past year and the ADDF’s plan to continue this momentum. “There has never been a more exciting time in Alzheimer’s research, and we would not be here without the vision, commitment, and leadership of the Lauder family. Their remarkable gift comes at a critical time, with a new era dawning in the field and the ADDF leading the charge to build upon recent breakthroughs. Our laser focus on a precision medicine and combination therapy approach will revolutionize treatment and stop Alzheimer’s in its tracks.”

The black-tie event featured an exclusive preview of Sotheby’s Impressionist, Modern, and Contemporary Art sales and wine pairings presented by Sotheby’s Wine.

Notable guests included:Jo Carole Lauder, Laura Lauder, Danielle Lauder, Rachel Lauder-Lyons, Lori Kanter-Tritsch, Fabrizio Freda, Karen Lauder, Nancy Goodes, Jane Hertzmark Hudis, Walter Isaacson,  Bonnie Lautenberg, Heidi and Tom McWilliams, Ann Tisch, Barbara Tober, Paula Zahn, Ginger and Larry Leeds, Hilary and Wilbur Ross, Eleanora Kennedy, Sharon Loeb and John Paulson and Alina de Almeida.
