French fashion house Chanel has named Matthieu Blazy, former Bottega Veneta creative director, as its new artistic director of fashion activities.The choice of Blazy signals a new aesthetic for the privately-owned brand.
The high-profile role has been vacant since the abrupt departure of Virginie Viard in June. Viard had worked at Chanel for nearly thirty years, alongside longtime Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld, taking over in 2019 following his death.
Owned by French billionaire Alain Wertheimer and his brother Gerard, Chanel is the world’s second-largest label after LVMH’s Louis Vuitton. Sales were up 16% last year to nearly $20 billion. In a statement, Wertheimer and Leena Nair, global chief executive officer called Matthieu Blazy “one of the most gifted designers of his generation.”

Miss Universe Harnaaz Sandhu joined Factice Collector and Facticerie Founder Sudhir Gupta for a private reception at Bergdorf Goodman to celebrate his induction into the Guinness World Records for the largest collection of factices in the world and the opening of his Faticerie: The Factice Collection.

Throughout the evening guests enjoyed light bites and champagne as they walked through BG Restaurant decorated in incredible florals and more than 350 factice bottles from Mr. Gupta’s collection. The Factice Collection, which contains more than 1,404 factices as counted and confirmed by Guinness World Records — but actually includes closer to 3,000 factices, features bottles from world-renowned fragrance houses such as Guerlain, Caron, Dior, CHANEL and Estée Lauder, valued from $2,000 to $100,000. The evening also highlighted Gupta’s very first factice, L’Air du Temps by Nina Ricci, which he uncovered while working at a perfume shop on Canal Street as a penniless graduate student in the early 1990’s.

Sudhir Gupta’s very first factice, L’Air du Temps by Nina Ricci, acquired around 1992.  Launched after World War II, the factice was made by Lalique in 1948 and the dove on top was meant as a symbol of peace.

Midway through the evening, Guinness World Records’ Michael Empric took the floor to present Gupta with his official plaque for his impressive collection. After Gupta was presented with the award, he shared a few words of gratitude, stating “Everything I have achieved has evolved from my passion for factices.”

With a 30-year career at Unilever, the global consumer goods company, Leena Nair has served as the company’s Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) and a member of the company’s Executive Committee since 2016. Leena Nair has built a global reputation for progressive and human-centred leadership, delivering significant business impact. She is responsible for over 150,000 employees across more than 100 countries globally.

Leena Nair is highly respected as a visionary leader whose ability to champion a long-term, purpose- driven agenda is matched with a consistently strong record of business outcomes. Leena is also a non- executive member of British Telecom, a member of the Board of the Leverhulme Trust, and was a non- executive Director on the UK Government’s Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy department. Leena Nair will begin her new role at the end of January next year.

CHANEL has announced that from January 1st 2021, Charlotte Casiraghi will become an ambassador and spokesperson for the House. She will also embody the campaign for the Spring-Summer 2021 Ready-to-Wear collection imagined by Virginie Viard, photographed in Monaco by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.

This announcement seals a long relationship based on trust and friendship, started by Karl Lagerfeld and continued today by Virginie Viard. Close to the House since her teenage years, photographed by the designer for the book The Little Black Jacket: Chanel’s Classic Revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld in 2012, Charlotte Casiraghi has always been loyal to the House, attending numerous CHANEL events and shows, and regularly wearing its creations.

With a degree in philosophy and a passion for literature and poetry – an art to which Karl Lagerfeld initiated her at a young age – the new CHANEL ambassador and spokesperson is President of the Rencontres philosophiques de Monaco, an association that she founded in 2015, whose aim is to celebrate and promote philosophy through monthly themed events dedicated to reflection, discussion and the passing on of ideas. This distinguished horse rider, who has taken part in several show-jumping competitions, is also the patron of the Monte-Carlo International Jumping event.

Perpetuating Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld’s unconditional love for literature, the House of CHANEL, Virginie Viard and Charlotte Casiraghi will shortly be unveiling a project entitled Les Rendez-vous littéraires rue Cambon [Literary rendezvous at rue Cambon]. Throughout 2021, these themed encounters, to be relayed on CHANEL’s website and social networks, will bring together female writers and actresses, in the company of friends of the House, to read, discuss and share their unique perspective on their own work or that of other historical or contemporary literary figures they hold dear.

The first of these rendezvous will take place on Tuesday January 26th 2021 in the salons of 31 rue Cambon. The campaign for CHANEL’s Spring-Summer 2021 Ready-to-Wear collection will be unveiled on January 1st.
