The Estée Lauder Companies has announced the promotion of Michelle Freyre to Global Brand President, Clinique, effective July 1, 2021. She will continue to report directly to John Demsey, Executive Group President, The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC).

“Michelle is an incredibly dynamic leader who has beautifully steered her brand through the challenges of the past year,” said Demsey. “I am particularly proud of how effectively she has balanced the needs of the business while being a truly thoughtful and empathetic leader to her brand team. A dynamic leader with deep experience leading a variety of beauty brands across categories and channels, Michelle’s promotion to Global Brand President, Clinique, recognizes her outstanding and visionary leadership in returning Clinique to global growth. She was appointed Senior Vice President/Global General Manager, Clinique in June 2020, and since then has made a significant impact on Clinique’s brand positioning, driving double digit growth for hero products, as well as redefining the innovation strategy behind Clinique’s hero franchises.  She has also driven Clinique’s acceleration in Online to be the #1 ELC brand in North America in that channel, while delivering the Clinique High-Touch experience at scale globally. Her inspirational leadership, deep expertise in beauty and skin care, together with her strong passion for connecting with global consumers, makes her uniquely suited to continue to lead Clinique in its next chapter of growth.

Michelle joined ELC from Johnson & Johnson in 2020, where she had an impressive 20-year career holding various leadership roles within its Consumer Health Products division, most recently serving as President, U.S. Beauty. In this role, she was responsible for the company’s portfolio of Beauty brands at the time, and led the successful performance and growth of many brands. Prior to that, she served as the General Manager of Neutrogena at J&J, and as the leader of the company’s Los Angeles campus.

Michelle is passionate about talent development and has a proven track record of fostering workplaces that embrace inclusion and diversity. She has received several industry awards and honors in recognition of her exceptional career, including being named to Fortune’s 2018 “50 Most Powerful Latinas in Business”. Jane will be succeeded at Clinique by Michelle Freyre, who will join the brand as Senior Vice President, General Manager, reporting to John Demsey, also effective July 1, 2020.

As ELC’s first ever Enterprise Marketing and Chief Data Officer, Jane will lead ELC’s company-wide strategy to build data-empowered, digitally-directed priorities to accelerate its growth. By optimizing the company’s vast and valuable data and integrating its analytic capabilities the goal is to drive breakthrough marketing and creative.

“We are focused on delivering the very best, high-quality products that leverage consumer insights from our enhanced data analytics, and I am confident that Jane is the right person to lead this important area of the business,” said Mr. Freda. “As Global Brand President of Clinique and leader of ELC’s enterprise-wide efforts to combine data-driven insights with creativity, she has successfully leveraged data and analytics capabilities to drive strong long-term growth at both the brand and enterprise level. Jane’s unique combination of understanding high-touch consumer experiences, and data analytics and insights, will further strengthen our innovative product offerings and experiences for our consumers globally. I look forward to working even more closely with Jane as she takes on this new role.”

Jane has over two decades of beauty industry experience, including more than 23 years at The Estée Lauder Companies. As Global Brand President of Clinique, she led the transformation of brand strategy, distribution, product innovation and consumer reach, positioning the brand for strong long-term growth. Under Jane’s leadership, Clinique fundamentally shifted nearly one-third of product revenue from low-growth distribution channels to high-growth channels and tripled Clinique’s online business. She also oversaw the development of product innovations including Moisture SurgeTM 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator and Clinique iDTM and technology innovations with Clinique Clinical RealityTM to strengthen the brand’s skincare position in clinical efficacy and high-touch services and personalization. Clinique’s market share gains in recent months across its core markets are a testament to the rebuilding of the brand.

Jane also leads ELC’s enterprise-wide transformation program focused on combining data and analytics capabilities with creativity to power ELC’s business and digital agenda. In her new role she will continue to drive this competency across the company. As a graduate of Stanford University and member of the Board of Directors of Eventbrite, a California-based global ticketing and event technology platform, Jane’s deep ties to Silicon Valley will be leveraged in her new role.

Jane’s organization will include BI&A, Corporate Marketing and Marketing and Consumer Supported Technology, a forward-looking portfolio management approach to data, marketing and consumer-facing technologies. ELC’s Business Insight & Analytics (BI&A) group will play a central role, and will report directly to Jane with a matrix line into Tracey T. Travis, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Jane’s leadership will enable BI&A to continue to accelerate the Company’s ability to unlock value across brands, functions, partners and employees.

Jane will lead the global Corporate Marketing function, including the regional Corporate Marketing organizations, Consumer and Product Marketing Insights, Global Consumer Care and Marketing Planning and A&P effectiveness. She will enable the facilitation and free flow of data among business units to help these teams to mine, analyze and share strategic insights more effectively. She will also enhance the integration
of cross-channel data to drive personalized marketing and true omni-channel activation.

Additionally, Jane and her team will ensure that ELC has access to cutting-edge digital innovations through a more formalized approach to strategic digital partnership management, including breakthrough marketing partnerships with leading organizations such as Facebook and Google. Her team will be scouting and developing relationships with emerging influential platforms and players in the marketing, digital innovation and consumer engagement space.

Finally, Jane will be charged with strategically deepening the company’s investments in Talent
Management and Capabilities within the Marketing and Consumer Engagement teams, helping to drive talent development, recruitment and breakthrough learning and education programs, making ELC into a career destination of choice for best-in-class brand building, marketing and consumer engagement talent around the world.

In her new role leading Clinique, Michelle Freyre will be responsible for guiding the brand’s overall strategic vision, including innovation, product development and marketing, and all facets of consumer and digital engagement. She will partner closely with members of the global Clinique leadership team to continue brand momentum by driving consumer relevance globally and connecting emotionally with consumers throughout their beauty journey. Michelle and her team will also work to imagine the future of the retail experience, including Clinical Reality, Virtual Selling and High Touch services.

Michelle joins The Estée Lauder Companies from Johnson & Johnson, where she had an impressive 20-year career holding various leadership roles within its Consumer Health Products division, most recently serving as President, U.S. Beauty. In this role, she was responsible for the company’s portfolio of beauty brands at the time, including Neutrogena, Aveeno, Clean & Clear and RoC, and led the successful performance of many brands. Notably, she successfully transformed the image of Johnson & Johnson Beauty with a fully re-imagined Celebrity Talent & Influencer Strategy, diversifying the talent portfolio to reflect a more integrated approach.

PRATT INSTITUTE COMMEMORATES 30th ANNIVERSARY OF MARC ROSEN SCHOLARSHIP AND EDUCATION FUND FOR PACKAGING BY DESIGN AT ART OF PACKAGING AWARD GALA

Gala Honors Beauty Luminary Jane Lauder with 2019 Art of Packaging Award

Pratt Institute, a global leader in higher education, welcomed luminaries of the packaging, design and fashion industries to its Art of Packaging Gala, which celebrates excellence in packaging design. The gala was held June 18th at a private club in Manhattan and raised funds for the Marc Rosen Scholarship Fund for Packaging by Design at Pratt Institute, the world’s only scholarship for master’s degree-level students looking to pursue careers in cosmetics and packaging design.

Jane Lauder, Global Brand President at Clinique, was presented with the Art of Packaging Award by Estée Lauder Executive Group President John Demsey, for her outstanding commitment to package design. The Art of Packaging Award is presented annually to a beauty industry company or individual that has excelled in the art form of package design.

The event was hosted by model and actress Carol Alt, and marked the 30th anniversary of the scholarship. In 2015, the fund established two full tuition scholarships focused on beauty packaging and design, the only one of its kind among higher education design institutions. To date, more than $4 million has been raised to fund scholarships and awards to more than 120 Pratt students, many of whom have become industry leaders. Jaynne Keyes, Appointee to the New York State Council on the Arts also presented Marc Rosen with a special proclamation of commendation from the Governor of New York for Marc’s continuing efforts to promote and enrich the NY culture and art communities.

Jane Lauder/Clinique joins previous recipients including Aramis & Designer Fragrances, Estée Lauder, Avon, Bath & Body Works, Calvin Klein, Coty Inc., Coty Prestige, Dior Beauty, Interparfums, Lancôme, M·A·C, Mary Kay Inc., P&G Prestige, Procter & Gamble, Ralph Lauren Fragrances, Shiseido, and others.

Marc Rosen is an internationally acclaimed entrepreneur and designer. He is Trustee Emeritus and an alumnus of Pratt Institute, where he teaches the world’s only course on cosmetics and Fragrance packaging design. Rosen’s cosmetics and fragrance packaging design course at Pratt Institute has attracted hundreds of students from around the world. The department that houses it, Graduate Communications Design, is part of Pratt Institute’s School of Design and was ranked as one of the top graduate graphic design programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report and collegecrunch.org.

This masters-level program comprises a broad-based curriculum in new product and package development, with courses in packaging design, brand development, visual communications, digital technology, marketing and structural packaging. The final stage of the program is the thesis, which, over two semesters, gives students an opportunity to develop an extensive and innovative project.
