Elite distinction celebrates the highest level of excellence and achievement in the field of fragrance creation

Firmenich, the world’s largest privately-owned fragrance and taste company, has appointed three new Master Perfumers. François-Raphaël Balestra, Wessel-Jan Kos and Haresh Totlani will join Firmenich’s most prestigious group of Master Perfumers dedicated to Consumer Fragrances for Beauty and Home Care. They will be joining an exclusive elite of only nine Master Perfumers who have reached the highest level of excellence and achievement in their respective fields, while exhibiting exemplary leadership qualities and a lived commitment to Firmenich’s values.

“Firmenich’s innovation and deep understanding of consumer habits and preferences enables us to deliver market-leading fragrances,” Firmenich CEO Gilbert Ghostine said. “What makes us stand out is our perfumers’ spark of creative genius. Their mastery makes for the truly successful touch that inspires consumers to fall in love with our customers’ brands and products. I am delighted to welcome three new Firmenich Master Perfumers who have shown excellence in their field, commitment to our values and who act as true role models for the whole community of perfumers.”

Ilaria Resta, Global President, Perfumery, commented: “Our three new Master Perfumers have over 80 years’ experience at the cutting edge of perfumery innovation, and their path to this level shows their dedication, work ethic, and strong commitment to their craft. They combine exceptional creativity with understanding of technology to augment performance, as well as an innate ability to drive customer intimacy by understanding consumer insights and anticipating the future trends in a complex and ever-changing market. One of the biggest mission of masters is to leave a long-lasting legacy in the market with their creations that live the test of time and become icons, as well as with their dedication to pass their experience to the younger generations to create the masters of the future.”

François-Raphaël Balestra, Master Perfumer

François-Raphaël Balestra is a Swiss national who graduated from EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, with a Master’s in Chemical Engineering. He joined Firmenich in 1999. Together with his role as perfumer for beauty care and home care products, creating olfactive signatures of major laundry products all over the globe, he is also the head of New Ingredients Discovery for Perfumery at Firmenich. Here he works in close collaboration with R&D on the screening of new generations of molecules and biotechnology ingredients to integrate to the perfumer’s palette and enhance perfumery creations. He notably collaborated on the creation of Dreamwood™, a white biotechnology innovation inspired by sandalwood that is 100% natural, 100% renewable carbon and ultimately biodegradable and Muguissimo™, an exceptionally close to nature Lily-of-the-Valley note born from green synthesis.

His vocation to become a perfumer started with his first visit to Firmenich Geneva’s offices at the age of seven, as the son of a now retired perfume lab assistant who had spent 40 years in the company. His fascination for the work of perfumers and the variety of raw ingredients naturally led him to becoming a perfumer. “Inspiration always comes from the ingredients first, they stimulate my creativity, especially our proprietary ingredients that embody the soul of Firmenich, they express our uniqueness, our difference, and our commitment to perfection,” he says.

Wessel-Jan Kos, Master Perfumer

Wessel-Jan Kos, a Dutch national from Hilversum, is a third-generation perfumer after his father and self-taught grandfather. His career as a Firmenich perfumer spans more than three decades. A graduate from ISIPCA, the renowned fragrance and cosmetics school in Paris, he is an all-round perfumer creating fragrances for all beauty care and home care applications for world renowned brands, winning over 200 new products a year over the past decade. Wessel-Jan’s career at Firmenich has taken him around the globe: in Geneva, Dubai, London, Cologne and Princeton, USA. During his years in the UK, he was the Vice President of the British Society of Perfumers. Wessel-Jan has been instrumental in the development of malodor counteraction technologies at Firmenich, putting his name to several patents. He has also contributed to the rise of biotechnology ingredients over the last years, notably Z11 HD, 100% biodegradable and made from 100% renewable carbon. “I like my fragrances to be simple and direct, so that people immediately understand what I intend to create,” he says.

Haresh Totlani, Master Perfumer

Haresh Totlani has been with Firmenich for the last 24 years, in Geneva, Singapore, Mumbai and London. He has created signature winning fragrances for many of the world’s best-known brands in Asia and Europe, as well as regional and local brands in many categories, especially for soap, shower gels, shampoos, fabric softeners and laundry detergents. Haresh, an Indian national, holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Mumbai and completed an Executive MBA Program from Kellogg-HKUST. From 2012 to 2015, he was the Head of Firmenich’s Creation Center in India, a role given for the first time to a perfumer. He has been a mentor to many younger Firmenich trainee perfumers and fragrance evaluators, and is a winner of the Patrick Firmenich Award both in 2019 and 2020, recognizing his creative excellence and his outstanding use of Firmenich ingredients to bring unique signatures to customers’ products. Haresh Totlani believes “perfumes change the way people feel. It makes them happy and confident.”

The newest Creation & Development Center will provide services to customers in more than 60 countries across the Middle East and Africa region

Firmenich, the world’s largest privately-owned perfume and taste company, has inaugurated its new regional hub today at Dubai Science Park, the region’s leading science-focused community. The newest Creation & Development Center further expands the company’s science and innovation capabilities through cutting edge technologies to service customers in more than 60 countries across the Middle East and Africa region. The 3,500-sqm area comprises a state-of-the-art research and science facility.

The official opening on 23 March 2022 was presided over by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Holding, Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer, Minister of Finance of Switzerland, and Gilbert Ghostine, CEO of Firmenich. The event was attended by H.E. Massimo Baggi, Ambassador of Switzerland to the UAE and Bahrain, H.E. Malek Al Malek, Director General of Dubai Development Authority and Group CEO of TECOM Group, Abdulla Belhoul, Chief Commercial Officer of TECOM Group, Arnaud Bachellier, General Manager of Firmenich in the region, as well as Marwan Abdulaziz Janahi, Managing Director of Dubai Science Park.

Firmenich’s advanced creation and sampling laboratory will allow the company to deliver high-quality and innovative ingredients for fine fragrances and consumer fragrances (used in body care and home care products) as well as a variety of F&B flavors designed to delight consumers in the region. The company aims to accelerate innovation and global expansion with enhanced access to key markets and evolving trends, while reducing the time to market for new products.

A first of its kind in the region, Firmenich’s facility is built upon the company’s Lab 4.0 vision of a future-proof laboratory, which aims to optimize the end-to-end flow of samples using industry best practices and is powered by artificial intelligence (AI). It includes a fully automated warehouse that can stock up to 40,000 products as well as a compounding robot connected to more than 240 ingredients that can create a fragrance sample in less than a minute.

The new facility has been fully designed to accommodate Firmenich’s future expansion plans.

On this occasion, H.E. Ambassador Massimo Baggi reflected, “Switzerland and the UAE’s long-standing bilateral relationship has been of significant economic and cultural value to both countries. We strive to enrich this partnership and continue the advancement of several sectors with the fruitful exchange of knowledge, technological resources and talent. Firmenich’s expansion in Dubai contributes to this objective and we are proud to be able to inaugurate this plant in the presence of our Finance Minister, Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer. Especially, as this regional headquarter will introduce even more technologies developed in Switzerland to nurture innovation and make a greater impact by leveraging investment and scientific research.”

Gilbert Ghostine, CEO at Firmenich, commented, “Creative excellence is at the core of Firmenich’s operations, while at heart we are committed to science and innovation guided by sustainability. These key ingredients have earned us our leading position within the industry, and we are confident they will continue to fuel our growth in new avenues. The Middle East & Africa region represents a strategic expansion opportunity for our company due to its diverse markets and wealth of opportunities. Our success stems from cultivating deep insights into our consumers and their preferences, and we can think of no better location to tap into the region’s rich audiences than Dubai Science Park. The business district’s world-class infrastructure and comprehensive, science-focused community bring us closer than ever to our audiences and will empower our ambitions to curate authentic experiences suited to regional tastes.”

H.E. Malek Al Malek, said: “Our leadership has been keen on developing a flourishing science sector within the region through strategic plans and a focused vision to develop an enabling business ecosystem suited to international companies and skilled talent in the various fields of science and research and development.”

He added, “Since its inception, the Group’s Dubai Science Park has contributed to laying the foundation of a globally competitive sector and attracted leading names and the brightest minds to enhance the landscape for research and development, while boosting the country’s exports from such vital and specialized sectors. The launch of Firmenich’s new regional hub in Dubai Science Park and their success over the past decade is yet another achievement for the emirate and marks a new milestone in cementing an integrated science, R&D environment for the UAE as a whole.”

A TALK WITH THE TWO ARTISTS

BEHIND SHALINI PARFUM,

SYMRISE MASTER PERFUMER MAURICE ROUCEL

AND

SHALINI KUMAR

guest edited by Despina Veneti

MAURICE ROUCEL is one of the world’s most celebrated olfactive artists, currently a Master Perfumer at Symrise, with an impressive output of beautiful fragrances throughout his nearly fifty-year career.

SHALINI KUMAR is the founder and creative director of Shalini Parfum, an Haute Parfumerie House that reflects her artistic sensibilities and successful career in Haute Couture.

Together, they have created seven pure perfumes of supreme quality and artistry, hailed as “modern masterpieces” by fragrance lovers and critics alike. The Shalini Parfum line is the only complete brand collection composed by Maurice Roucel in his long and distinguished career – an important part of his creative legacy.

SHALINI, what prompted you to launch a fragrance line?

It was serendipitous. A friend introduced me to Maurice Roucel, who had just moved to NYC from Paris. At the time, I still had my Haute Couture House, and I invited Maurice to visit my atelier. It was love at first sight! He immediately connected to my collection, saying that its timeless elegance felt like coming home. As our friendship flourished, we decided to create a fragrance that would echo the standards of Haute Couture, with the finest raw materials and Maurice’s own supreme craftsmanship. After fertile discussions about my favorite flowers and aromas, Maurice composed my namesake perfume, Shalini – our very first creation. I was enamoured with it, and desired to present it in a Lalique flacon that would reflect its exquisite beauty. We introduced the perfume to Bergdorf Goodman, and Pat Saxby, the Divisional Merchandising Manager, immediately wanted to launch Shalini there exclusively.

SHALINI, how is it working with one of the world’s finest perfumers?

Maurice and I are close friends; furthermore, we speak the same language when it comes to creation. I express my vision with words, and Maurice interprets it in olfactive language. With friendship comes trust, and loyalty. By now, he knows intuitively what I’m yearning for. It’s not usual for a Master Perfumer to work that closely with a brand owner. Yet Symrise has been very understanding about how effective our working relationship is, and lets us always communicate directly.

MAURICE, what is it like working with Shalini as your creative director?

I find working with Shalini especially stimulating. We are collaborators, co-creators… After she communicates to me what she’s looking for, I form my own ideas and she gives me the space to develop them. Our relationship is based on mutual trust and, for me, that is the best way to work. I know what her tastes, standards and requirements are, and she gives me the freedom I need to create what I think would be best for her collection.

Shalini’s Fleur Japonais Parfum created with Symrise Master Perfumer Maurice Roucel

SHALINI, how long does it take to create a new fragrance with Maurice?

It can take anywhere from 6-9 months to a year. Once I am struck by inspiration, I communicate with him. He says that my briefs are always clear and concise. There is very little back and forth between us once he has grasped the concept. When he feels he has created what I envisioned, he may send several variations for me to pick from. But it could be only one version, like in the case of Fleur Japonais. You can’t tell Van Gogh to add more blue or more yellow to his painting – and that’s the kind of respect I show to Maurice, befitting the great olfactive artist that he is. Once the formula is selected, Shalini parfums go through an extensive maturation and maceration process – not unlike the evolution and aging that a Grand Cru needs to reach perfection.

SHALINI, why have you placed such emphasis on natural ingredients of supreme quality.

Haute Couture, in which I’ve had a successful career, utilizes the finest fabrics and best craftsmanship – I wanted the same principles applied to my Haute Parfum Collection. We use precious naturals for their beauty, purity, strength and special energy. I want the highest quality of naturals to achieve the highest level of energy, and emotion. We use the most expensive Bulgarian rose absolute in Amorem Rose to reach the maximum of its healing energy (rose possesses the most intense energy for mending one’s heart). In Jardin Nocturne, we use the highest quality of oud from old trees, to reflect their wisdom and strength. In Paradis Provence, we use lavender which is thought to connect the wearer to heaven – thus the feeling of peace when you wear it; thyme, jasmine and neroli also have their own restorative powers. I’m always delighted to hear our clients recognizing the healing energy of our perfumes. Paradis Provence proved particularly relevant during the times of global pandemic.

MAURICE, shalini already explained why the use of precious naturals is so important to her. Can you give us your point of view?

When you want to offer something truly special, you have to work with fine-quality ingredients. With Shalini, I am free to create what I think is best, regardless of cost considerations. I use my knowledge and experience to choose the very best, because that’s what Shalini is after: excellence. Certain naturals are very expensive. Bulgarian rose can cost as much as 13,000€ per kg. The Assam oud we’re using in Jardin Nocturne can cost up to 60,000€ per kg. Orris butter can cost from 15,000€ to even 150,000€ per kg! That makes it more expensive than gold and platinum. Shalini lets me use these precious raw materials as I see fit. It is not everyday that I get to work with such exceptional ingredients. I balance the naturals with a small amount of other ingredients. I don’t dislike synthetics at all, not when they’re used masterfully. If you use only naturals, you will inevitably be lacking some character. But when you use only aromachemicals, you will surely be lacking quality.

SHALINI, how do you begin the creative process and how do you provide direction to Maurice?

I feel an intense inspiration for each new fragrance. When I was in Dubai, I was mesmerized by the fragrant night air – the oud, the night blooming flowers, the wafting smell of saffron, the stillness… I instantly wanted to recreate that experience. I explained this to Maurice, who had had the same experience while in Dubai, so he knew exactly what I was looking for. He embraced my vision, and added his personal touch – the Maurice Roucel signature.

For Amorem Rose, I sent Maurice a love sonnet by Pablo Neruda to convey the exact mood I wanted. For Paradis Provence, I provided an excerpt from Colette’s book “Break of Day” set in St. Tropez. We don’t work from a typical corporate brief. Our style is much more intuitive. In the case of Vanille Rêve, it was actually Maurice who took creative initiative: he suggested that we needed a gourmand in the Shalini Collection. He created a gourmand fragrance in his own style, composed of the purest vanilla, elegant spices and intoxicating white flowers (tuberose, tiare, jasmine) – something that was not too sweet.

This seven-perfume series with Maurice is inspired by the moods and passions of the soul – the journey of life. Nirvana is life’s final stage, where the soul comes to the understanding of self, purpose and destiny. I wanted our Fleur Japonais to capture the transcending beauty of this phase. In Japan, the Sakura and the Samurai are deeply connected because of the fleeting nature of their lives. Fleur Japonais is the synergy between the delicate flower and the Japanese man.

MAURICE, as a perfumer, how did you approach Nirvana as the concept Shalini wanted for Fleur Japonais?

The key ingredient to interpreting Shalini’s Zen concept was frankincense, which puts one in the right mood for meditation. This raw material is reminiscent of the ambiance of a Catholic church: the priest burns frankincense in the censer, spreading smoke everywhere. That’s the feeling I wanted for Fleur Japonais. It is very peaceful, serene and soft. It’s the softest fragrance in the collection.

MAURICE, the idea for Vanille Rêve came from you, can you tell us more about it?

I always try to present Shalini with something different from the already existing fragrances in her line, while also maintaining the collection’s stylistic coherency. I wanted a gourmand in the French style – not too literal, and unlike most of the mass market-orientated vanilla scents. I am not working with mass markets in mind, especially when composing for Shalini. Those kind of fragrances may be successful commercially, but they are not my style. Vanille Rêve is my personal notion of a gourmand fragrance, and its ideal balance. I was inspired by the cinnamon cookies known in France as “spéculoos”, and added a beautiful vanilla, Shalini’s favorite white flowers and anise.

MAURICE, please tell us about your treatment of orris in Iris Lumière, a finalist at the Fragrance Foundation Awards.

I was keen on creating a perfume centered around orris butter, but not in the expected way. I feel that my personal touch and taste are especially evident in this creation. Most iris fragrances are distinctively powdery. Iris Lumière is not. In it, I aimed to capture the lunar energy of the full moon – with a cool aura reminiscent of the moon, and unexpected fresh, green and watery touches. All the other Shalini fragrances up to that point were hot, like the sun. This one introduced a different energy and ambiance.

MAURICE, the Shalini fragrance line is already an important part of your overall œuvre, can you define your signature style as a Master Perfumer?

I don’t really call myself a “Master Perfumer”.  I am doing perfume the way I feel it should be done. If there’s one constant in my work, it’s that my formulas are rather simple in construction – they don’t require dozens of ingredients. To me, the strength of a formula is to be short, and create emotion. Shorter is better – but also harder. It’s more difficult to make something beautiful and distinctive based on 10 ingredients, than it is to keep adding more and more. Think about Beethoven’s No. 5 symphony, which is famous for its unforgettable four-note opening motif. Not everyone in the world can do that. This is my strength, to be clear and simple. To create something that is easy to understand, and hard to forget.

My way of creating a perfume is not just an intellectual process, it involves the emotions. For me, a fragrance needs to create an emotional connection with the wearer, beyond being something that just smells good. There are many good fragrances in the market, and I’d like to contribute to that – ideally, with my two greatest wishes being fulfilled: a good amount of artistic freedom and a common goal to elicit emotion. Working for Shalini satisfies both these needs.

SHALINI — how do you envision the future of Shalini Parfum?

At this point, I feel that we have completed a creative cycle with our seven existing perfumes – marked by a magical number that is linked with extraordinary things, like the 7 Precious Stones or the 7 Wonders of the World. I see Shalini Parfum moving on to another Collection, exploring new themes. When I go to a museum and I see a whole series of works by a painter like Van Gogh, Monet or Picasso, reflecting a certain creative period or exploring a particular theme, the series as a whole has more impact on me than the individual paintings: it can better illustrate the artist’s overall vision. I find this to be also true with my perfumes, and I would like to continue the concept of thematic/stylistic coherency in my future collections.

From a business point of view, we are continuing to expand worldwide. As our clientele and distribution network grows, we need to adapt our company structure accordingly. We are delighted with the enormous outpouring of love from our clients, who enthusiastically embrace the energy of our fragrances in their everyday lives. My great desire is to keep generating beauty, and make our creations globally available.

We are also considering adding candles and bath products to our fine fragrance line. The way I see it, the candles link the perfume to its very origins, the fragrant smoke from religious ceremonies, while the bath products connect to the ancient rituals of cleansing body and soul. These products incorporate the energy of fire and water, and I’d love to be able to add them to our offerings. Above all, I’d love for Maurice Roucel to continue being my collaborator in any new, beautiful adventures that are yet to come!

Firmenich’s leadership in sustainability is supported by its third-party ratings, with the highest ‘Platinum’ EcoVadis rating in the industry for social and environmental performance and a score of 88/100, as well as a Sustainalytics ranking as 37th out of approximately 15,000 companies rated worldwide. The Group is also one of only two companies in the world to have received a CDP triple “A” rating in climate, water and forests for four consecutive years. Firmenich is now driving its performance to the next level with ambitious targets for Perfumery.

Firmenich’s 2030 Conscious Perfumery ambitions are that:

  • The fragrance portfolio will comprise 99% of ultimately or partially biodegradable ingredients, as defined by the OECD.
  • The carbon impact of the perfumery business will be reduced by 25%1.
  • 100 % of fragrances will be renewable as defined by ISO 16128.
  • Responsible Sourcing is reinforced with 90% of suppliers’ spend rated EcoVadis Silver or better.
  • 100% of the fragrance portfolio will be assessed for environmental and social impact in order to provide

fact-based transparency and drive constant improvement in formulations.

“We see a growing consumer demand to know ingredients are biodegradable, renewable, and that the sourcing of natural ingredients respects the environment, and supports communities,” states Michal Benmayor, Vice President, Conscious Perfumery Business Development, Firmenich. “With our Conscious Perfumery ambitions, we aim to drive innovation and creativity to advance the development of delightful and performing fragrances that are also more conscious and eco-friendly.”

Firmenich, the world’s largest privately-owned fragrance and taste company, has welcomed Bruno Jovanovic as Senior Perfumer to its Fine Fragrance team. With over 20 years of experience in fine fragrance, Bruno is known for his streamlined yet sophisticated perfumes using unique combinations of ingredients.

“We constantly strive for the highest level of creativity in the perfume industry, and we are thrilled that such a talented perfumer is joining our Firmenich family,” said Ilaria Resta, President, Global Perfumery. “Bruno’s appointment once again demonstrates Firmenich’s commitment to excellence in creativity and, as a Perfumer centric organization, to setting new creative references in the market.”

Jerry Vittoria, President, Global Fine Fragrance added: “Bruno’s work spans two decades and includes some of the most prestigious fragrances launched worldwide. His strong dedication to the art of perfumery is matched by his intellectual approach to creation, and his powerful signatures are highly appreciated by peers and loved by consumers.”

Born in France, Bruno was enchanted with odors, scents and olfactive ingredients from a very young age. Upon discovering the vast array of different perfumes sold at department stores in Paris while studying at Lycée Condorcet, Bruno realized he wanted to become a perfumer. Bruno earned a degree in Physics and Chemistry at Université Pierre et Marie Curie, and later enrolled at the perfumery school ISIPCA, where he graduated with top honors.

Upon graduation, Bruno moved to New York City and joined IFF, spending a total of 20 years there and in Paris, creating some of the most celebrated fragrances worldwide. His vast body of work includes iconic fragrances for Hugo Boss, Coach, Paco Rabanne, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Frederic Malle and Armani. Bruno regards his profession as a vocation where each creation embodies both his expression of art and his own sensitivities.

“It’s an honor to join Firmenich, a fragrance house renowned for its commitment to perfumers and its industry-leading palette of innovative ingredients spanning both naturals and molecules,” explained Jovanovic. “I’m excited to join the leading house for both sustainable and renewable fragrances and have the opportunity to work with Firmenich’s extensive palette of captive ingredients.”

Based in Paris, Bruno will report directly to Jerry Vittoria, and will work with our global customers on fine fragrance creation.

As part of its long term strategy to expand its capabilities in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Givaudan has announced that it is to acquire Myrissi. Founded in 2014 and based in France, Myrissi has developed a patented AI technology capable of translating fragrances into color patterns and images, relevant to the consumer as well as predicting the end consumer’s emotional response.

The link between colors, emotions, and fragrances was modeled on the basis of a database of more than 25,000 consumer tests. This unique consumer-centric approach allows Myrissi to support the development of fragrances that fully echoes customers’ marketing briefs. The emotional impact of a product is enhanced by avoiding the cognitive dissonances that appear when sensory messages are not perfectly consistent. The uniqueness of the product and the brand identity are therefore amplified and this helps consumers to select a fragranced product in store or via e-commerce channels that has a higher chance to be liked.

Maurizio Volpi, President of Givaudan Fragrance & Beauty said: “The acquisition of Myrissi is aligned with our long term Fragrance & Beauty strategy; their expertise in AI will support us in proposing to our customers new visual and verbal storytelling approaches to consumers. This is particularly important in a time when e-commerce is booming. Our mission will be to support our customers to evoke the smell of their products in the most inspiring way, helping consumers to choose the product that best fits their preferences.”

Muriel Jacquot, Founder of Myrissi added: “We are very proud to join Givaudan and to bring in the platform that we have developed with success for ten years. We strongly believe that this is a great opportunity to expand our digital expertise in telling compelling fragrance stories that resonate emotionally with consumers.” The terms of the deal will not be disclosed and Givaudan intends to fund the transaction from existing resources. The planned acquisition remains subject to formal approvals from the relevant regulatory authorities and the transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2021.

Myrissi is a company founded in 2014 by Muriel Jacquot resulting from 10 years of university research carried out at the University of Lorraine. Myrissi is the first company to have designed an Intelligent Sensory Translator dedicated to the development of fragrant products (fine fragrance, beauty care, and home care). Myrissi has the largest known international oduor-colour database in the world with more than 25,000 tests. Based on Deep Learning technologies, this translator works on two databases built with consumers. The first basis predicts the coloured representation of any odour whilst the second is an affective database containing 64 different dimensions (emotions, moods, attitudes and interpersonal postures). It allows you to define the emotional environment carried by the sensory properties of a finished product. Learn more at: https://myrissi.fr/en/

Firmenich, the world’s largest privately-owned perfume and taste company, is pleased to announce the appointment of Levenza Toh to the position of Vice President, Perfumery, Southeast Asia, Japan and Korea. Based out of Singapore, she will be responsible for leading the Perfumery business in the region.

“Levenza joins Firmenich with a strong understanding of local market dynamics, drawing from her extensive international experience and deep knowledge of the Asian market,” said Felix Frowein, Senior Vice President, Global Consumer Fragrances, Firmenich. “Witha strong network encompassing leading manufacturing companies in Personal and Home Care, as well as local customers, we are confident in Levenza’s leadership to spearhead our business in the region.”

Toh replaces Rajan Arul, who is retiring from Firmenich after 33 years with the organization. Arul first joined Firmenich Singapore in 1988 and worked in Mumbai, Geneva and London during his career. He also championed the pioneering recruitment and integration of visually impaired sensory panelists at Firmenich in Singapore.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to Rajan for the exemplary leadership he has shown throughout his career, playing an instrumental role in transforming the business and grooming talents within the region over the past decade. His legacy will remain a strong inspiration for both business and colleagues as we continue to push boundaries in a world of transformation,” added Frowein.

Toh joins Firmenich from Global Amines Company, a joint venture between Clariant and Wilmar, where she held the position of General Manager APAC, leading sales, marketing, business development, technical, R&D and manufacturing. Prior to that, she worked at Clariant, BASF and Royal Dutch Shell in various commercial roles. Toh holds a BA with Honors in Chemical Engineering from the National University of Singapore and a dual Executive MBA from Tsinghua SEM and INSEAD. She is Singaporean and has lived in Malaysia, Hong Kong and Germany. She speaks English and Mandarin, as well as Malay and Cantonese. Toh will report to Frowein.
