Givaudan CEO Gilles Andrier is an exemplary leader who is beloved and admired by all those who have worked for him -and with him, throughout his career. Over his two decades at Givaudan, he has not only enhanced the company’s value, but has built a network of strong global relationships and a reputation for trust and enthusiasm.

As he is honored by the Fragrance Foundation with their prestigious 2024 Hall of Fame Award, here is a repost of their Interview with Gilles Andrier…

“My favorite part of my job is the interactions,” says Givaudan CEO Gilles Andrier “I’m most stimulated when I’m engaged with others. It can be with clients or with an employee in the plant or in the lab, but I am happiest when at the end of every day I can say that I learned something.”

About receiving the prestigious Hall of Fame recognition, Andrier says, “It’s a great honor. I embrace it for myself, but I also feel that it is a recognition of what’s at the heart of perfume—the perfumers, the craftsmanship, the magic of this business which I have loved for the last 30 years without any diminishing intensity. It is a recognition of Givaudan, which is a wide company because it has made so many acquisitions, but also a deep company because it goes back 250 years to when the industry started.”

Speaking from Geneva, just one stop on his forever-busy travel schedule, Andrier gives a glimpse into his life beyond Givaudan—he is married to acclaimed Vice President perfumer Daniela Andrier, with whom he has raised six children—and reveals how his personal passions inform his work as CEO. “I would say that exploring, experimenting, and never being afraid of doing things differently has shaped me,” he says, “and has let me become more of who I truly am, rather than just a guy in a suit.”

How has being married to a perfumer shaped the way that you view fragrance? 

Perfumers are at the heart of what we do. Being married to a perfumer has greatly enhanced my understanding of their perspective. For example, seeing how their work has to adjust to the fast changing environment surrounding them, handling the increasing speed and number of projects, and  working with a palette of ingredients constrained with ever more regulations. The palette of ingredients is, like the alphabet, the only thing they have in common. However, the beauty of fragrance creation is the diversity of perfumers, each expressing themselves in a different language. So there are as many perfumers as individualities. Therefore, being married to a perfumer gave me one perspective, but conscious it is unique to her.

What are your favorite things to do when you’re not working? 

I have a lovely family, and we enjoy exploring, traveling, and spending time together. And I cannot stop myself from being active. I love sports, especially cycling. And I love listening to music. I have always thought there is a similarity between music and perfume in the way that they touch emotions. A perfume is like putting a magical piece of music into a bottle.

Do you apply any insights or strategies from your leisure pursuits to your leadership at Givaudan? 

I used to do a lot of sailboat racing when I was young, and how you work with a crew, how you help each other, how you are in there on the same boat being safe but also competing, and how you face the elements of the ocean and the wind—all of those things say a lot about individuals, but also how they behave as a team facing adversity. And when running Givaudan, these images sometimes resurface for me. It’s not like running a large company is like sailing a big boat, but there are a lot of analogies around how people can work together.

How has your leadership style changed over the years that you’ve been with Givaudan? 

It’s changed a lot. At the beginning, I was a bit intimidated. I had to learn about a lot that I had not been used to, like dealing with investors and shareholders—and it’s a very large company, so it wasn’t just about scaling up what I had done in the past but doing additional things that I hadn’t done before. In that stage of learning you are not yet totally yourself because you are being careful and safe. But there comes a moment when you begin to explore different ways of managing. I have experimented with ways of communicating and finding the right level of involvement in details. And I think that over time it has been a journey where I have become more and more myself.

What qualities do you think are most essential for good leadership? 

Curiosity is the greatest strength I’ve had in all my jobs. The interest and ability to listen. When you show curiosity then you engage teams and the whole company. I’m also quite a demanding guy and if I don’t get something, I will go and chase it. That’s why I think Givaudan is performing quite nicely today. But the other thing that is important is humility. With humility comes the idea of being yourself in the job and shaping the job the way you want to shape it. Having humility inspires others to come closer to you. It is a good friend because you know what you don’t know and that you’re never at the top—there is always more to learn. I think that is essential.

In what ways do you think that building an emphasis on diversity is important, not only at Givaudan but in the fragrance industry as a whole? 

It’s extremely important. When Givaudan shaped our purpose years ago it was not just about our impact on the environment, we also made ambitious targets and commitments on diversity, equity, and inclusion. It’s not just to look good—I hate that the same way I hate greenwashing. We are people who, when we say we are going to do something, always deliver. Diversity is really part of the culture of Givaudan because we are a consolidation of many companies in many different countries, with 16,000 people around the world. It’s built into our DNA, but we are focused on making progress and helping everyone feel included. That’s work we do every day. And it’s not just inside the company. We have consumers who embrace all genders and all types of diversity and we need to be relevant to them when we create fragrances.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? 

I could go with figures. Givaudan was worth 4 billion when I started. It’s worth 40 billion now. But everybody will forget figures and those types of achievements. I think my biggest achievement is the common recognition that Givaudan is a “Human Company.” I have always believed it is almost more important how results are achieved than the results themselves. It is about the culture of a company, which makes companies sustain. It’s about feeling that you’re doing something good and contributing.

It’s the type of leader you are which makes the biggest impact. That’s what people remember.

The Leading Ingredient and Formulation Event for the Beauty Industry Filled with Inspiration, Innovation, and Celebration

The New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists (NYSCC) 45th Annual Suppliers’ Day was held once again at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. Showcasing thousands of ingredients and raw materials on a sold-out exhibit floor that housed in excess 103,000 net square feet of exhibits while attracting 11,085 registrants, representing 72 countries, Suppliers’ Day 2024 enjoyed nearly an 8% increase in overall attendance – more than 35% increase since its move to NYC in 2017.

“The beauty community truly showed up for Suppliers’ Day with our theme  “INSPIRE. INNOVATE. CELEBRATE.” evident end-to-end at the Javits Center,” said Amber Evans, Chair of NYSCC. “Every element of product development was on display and optimism and excitement for growth and innovation in all product categories was high.”

In addition to an exhibit floor that featured 567 exhibiting companies including 139 new exhibitors, Suppliers’ Day unique in-classroom technical and marketing education programs attracted 523 conference delegates, its largest audience to date. Popular programs included the Scientific Advisory Committee curated courses on hair, biotechnology, and nutricosmetics, as well as sessions on fragrance, opportunities and challenges in the cosmetic industry, Chinese innovations, mircobiome, and fragrance.  Essential Suppliers’ Day programming on World of Chemistry, Digital Age of Beauty and Discover Sustainability were also well received as well as the innovations from exhibitors and special sessions on current beauty innovations, Latina and California product development updates, sustainable developments in the cosmetic sector, influencer panel and more.

A special Keynote Presentation with L’OREAL’s Dr. Qian Zheng, Senior VP Head of Advanced Research North America & Global Regenerative Beauty Discovery Domain in conversation with Kathryn Hopkins, Senior Beauty Editor of WWD, on L’ORÉAL’S  Green Sciences Revolution took place on May 2.

The highest number of students also participated in the Future Chemists Workshop with more than 100 students, from 32 colleges and universities across the country, formulating an antioxidant primer.  The NYSCC Mentorship Mixer and Career Development Program connected members with mentees looking to enhance their professional development and career in cosmetic chemistry.

New this year was the INSPIRATION ZONE where attendees were able to touch and feel the ingredients of tomorrow.  These ingredients were selected by BEAUTYSTREAMS senior trend analysts and forecasters.

Robert Fuller, Jennifer Wenskus, Bobby Chow, Mark Knitowski and George Ledes on the NYSCC 2024 Supplier’s Day Lunch & Learn panel.

George Ledes moderated a Lunch & Learn panel on Fragrance: The Invisible Art with a great line-up of esteemed fragrance experts representing an array of perspectives on this topic. Robert Fuller spoke about Olfaction and Malodorous Perception; Bobby Chow from DSM -Firmenich discussed the Sensory Symphony Unvieling the Interplay of Color, Fragrance and Mood; Jenifer Wenskus of Circana spoke about Fragrance Trends to Watch; and Mark Knitowski addressed a range of topics in our field from Al in Fragrance – focus on the customer rather than the creation, the vision to see fragrance in relation to the customer, how Gen Z & Gen A are changing the fragrance landscape, and keeping experiential in the fragrance category. It was a refreshing and unique look at fragrance from a myriad of perspectives.

The INDIE 360° Pavilion was again a popular destination for attendees with 16 brands participating and featuring a Latina beauty capsule. Ziba Beauty, founded by Sumita Batra, was this year’s INDIE 360° People’s Choice Award, for its modern signature brow collection.

Givaudan has announced the passing of Olivier Pescheux, on 10 July in Paris, France, at the age of 57, after fighting against a long disease.

Born in Paris in 1966 and graduated from ISIPCA, Olivier started his career in 1990 by joining Payan Bertrand in Bangkok. On his return to Paris in 1992, he placed his talent to the service of perfume house Annick Goutal, before transitioning to Kao Corporation in 1993. He joined Givaudan in 1998, returning in 2006 after a brief period at Quest International.

Well-known for his elegant and luminous olfactive writing, Olivier has been at the origin of countless successes such as One Million by Paco Rabanne, Higher by Dior, L.12.12 Blanc by Lacoste, Eau des Sens, Fleur de Peau and Orphéon by Diptyque. His endless talent and creative versatility led him to be elevated to the rank of Master Perfumer.

CEO Gilles Andrier says: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Olivier Pescheux. He has not only been the architect of many of the most beautiful and iconic fragrances of the industry, but also an adored person, dedicated to his art and committed to mentor the upcoming generation of perfumers.”

“Olivier liked to define himself as a craftsman, and he really was,“ says Xavier Renard, Global Head of Fine Fragrances. “His ability to transcend any material, to make any ingredient tell new stories, made Olivier one of the most important and celebrated creative minds. He leaves us with a prodigious amount of creations and his bright personality will continue to live through his legacy.”

Oriol Segui, Head of Fine Fragrances Europe adds: “Olivier immensely contributed to shape today and tomorrow’s perfumery. He was loved for his warm and friendly character, his generosity and his boundless artistry. Olivier will be deeply missed.”

Givaudan has announced that Matthieu Befve has been appointed as Head of Fine Fragrance North America, effective May 1st, 2023. Matthieu brings with him a strong strategic understanding of the business, as well as the drive, passion & leadership required for success in taking the region into its next chapter of growth. Prior to his current role, Matthieu gained a deep knowledge of the Fragrance & Beauty business through his international experience across multiple functions & regions in both Consumer Products and Fine Fragrances since joining Givaudan in 2011, most recently as the VP Sales Specialty Retail.

After a dedicated career spanning 34 years at Givaudan, Alison Chaneski, Head of Sales Prestige and Fine Beauty, has decided to retire at the end September 2023. Alison has worked successfully across a wide variety of businesses during her tenure with the company, and we thank Alison enormously for her many contributions.

Concurrently, Jennifer Habay has been appointed as Head of Sales Fine Fragrance North America, effective May 15th 2023. Jennifer will be responsible for leading the Fine Fragrance sales team. She is currently Global Business Director for the Unilever account, and brings a wealth of experience to this role from her 24 years with Givaudan.

Xavier Renard, Global Head of Fine Fragrances, said: “Firstly, I would like to thank Alison for the many years of loyal service and her contributions to Givaudan. Creatogether: Givaudan collaborates with TMIC to launch fragrance industry’s first AI-powered fragrance co-creation service in China

Givaudan, a global leader in fragrance & beauty creation, has launched its unique human-machine co-creation service powered by artificial intelligence (AI) in collaboration with the Tmall Innovation Centre (TMIC), enabling customers to realise their olfactory vision with unsurpassed sampling speed in China’s unique e-commerce market.

Since June 2021, Givaudan has been working in a partnership with Tmall, the Alibaba group’s open business-to-consumer (B2C) platform, to combine its creative fragrance solutions and production capabilities with the consumer behaviour data capabilities of the T-Lab innovation laboratory. ‘Creatogether’ leverages the newly updated version of TLAB 2.0, using data from TMIC’s olfactory culture map and Givaudan’s own AI-powered fragrance assistant, Carto.

Our unique co-creation model allows brands to get deeply involved in the fragrance creation process. Thanks to a visual touch screen, customers are able to quickly realise their olfactory vision. The interactive process is carried out in close collaboration with our perfumers, harnessing the latest data insights from TMIC and the infinite creative capacities of Carto.

‘Creatogether’ enables Givaudan to offer customers in China human-machine fragrance co-creation in just five steps: creative ideation phase including in-depth research and analysis, olfactive visual exploration, digital fragrance co-creation with AI instant sampling technology, commercialised fragrance submission and finally, new product validation, launch strategy and marketing plan.

Givaudan, a global industry leader in the world of scent and beauty, and LanzaTech NZ, Inc., an innovative Carbon Capture and Transformation (“CCT”) company have announced a collaboration for the development of sustainable fragrance ingredients from renewable carbon.

Renewable carbon is carbon that avoids or substitutes the use of additional fossil carbon. Examples include carbon from CO2 and carbon recycling. Multiple commercial facilities are already licensing LanzaTech’s technology, converting various waste carbon sources to ethanol, including the conversion of industrial emissions in China, thanks to the power of industrial biology and a proprietary biocatalyst. With over 15 years scale-up experience, LanzaTech’s approach to carbon transformation is bringing renewable carbon into people’s lives through the conversion of emissions to ethanol and the subsequent conversion of ethanol to the building blocks necessary to make a wide range of consumer goods, such as laundry detergent, clothing, shoes, and food packaging. In addition, thanks to its synthetic biology and modeling capabilities, LanzaTech can introduce new pathways into their biocatalyst to produce a variety of different chemicals through this process.

The research collaboration with Givaudan is one that is expected to leverage this synthetic biology capability and go beyond the production of ethanol, with the companies working together to establish novel pathways to key fragrance ingredients used across the Givaudan portfolio. By searching for new opportunities to bring perfumery material innovations to life, the companies have a shared goal of using sustainable methods to continue serving consumers through enhancing the perfumery palette and being good for the planet as well.

Both companies have been longstanding members of the Renewable Carbon Initiative, an organization whose goal is to support and speed up the transition from fossil carbon to renewable carbon for all organic chemicals and materials.

“Industry has to go beyond using renewable energy,” said Michael Carus, founder of the RCI.” All fossil carbon use must end, as the carbon contained in the molecules of chemicals and plastics is destined to end up in the atmosphere sooner or later. Only a full phase-out of fossil carbon will help to prevent a further increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations.”

On June 9th, The Fragrance Foundation celebrated the fragrance industry’s outstanding creative achievements at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater in New York City. With a mission to inspire the world to discover the artistry and passion of fragrance, the theme for this year’s event focused on “gratitude’ as the industry has emerged more resilient than ever.

Actor and television host Mario Lopez and his wife, actress Courtney Lopez, co-hosted the event with Fragrance Foundation President Linda G. Levy. Additional guests and presenters included producer and entrepreneur Naomi Watts, legendary designer Tommy Hilfiger, award-winning director and cinematographer Louie Schwartzberg, acclaimed designers Jason Wu and Sergio Hudson, and artist Rebecca Moses.

The program began with the Lopezes presenting Women’s Media Campaign of the Year to D.S. & DURGA’s “I Don’t Know What is Everywhere” campaign and the night continued with Tom Ford’s Black Orchid being crowned the winner of the Fragrance Hall of Fame. Billie Eilish, Gucci and Tom Ford fragrances were awarded the show’s most prestigious awards, with Eilish Eau de Parfum voted as Most Popular Fragrance of The Year.

Naomi Watts also took to the stage to present the winners of Luxury Packaging and Prestige/Popular Packaging of the Year and Jason Wu granted Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia Eau de Parfum the winner of Women’s Prestige Fragrance of the Year.

Jeff Gennette, Macy’s Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, was honored with the 2022 Hall of Fame award. François Demachy, former Dior Perfumer-Creator received the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Perfumer. The evening brought together the global fragrance community as TFFAwards Finalists were celebrated in twenty categories and the 2022 Award Winners were announced (See below).
