In 2021, Symrise began a three-year research and development collaboration with French company Antofénol based in Plestan, Brittany. The company’s focus are natural solutions for replacing conventional agroextracts obtained by innovative, sustainable eco-extraction using microwave, ultrasound and vacuum technologies. The partners want to work together to develop environmentally friendly products. They will focus primarily on cosmetic ingredients and scents as well as the extraction of valuable compounds from side streams of the Flavor & Nutrition division.

The partners will contribute their specific skill sets and experiences to the collaboration in order to develop jointly unique products. Antofénol’s particular strengths lie in the microwave, ultrasound and vacuum extraction techniques, feasible even in combined mode, of natural raw materials. The technologies provide a number of advantages: They can adapt well to various raw materials, they use fast and effective energy transfer, and they save time compared with conventional processes. Antofénol’s high competency in the selection, sourcing and valuation of natural raw materials is also adding to this. In return, Symrise contributes its expertise in research and product development to the partnership, as well as its knowledge of the market, customers, and consumer demands. Of the Holzminden group, the cosmetic ingredients and scent divisions – both anchored in the Scent & Care segment – and France based Diana Nova from the Flavor & Nutrition segment participate in the collaboration.

“We feel delighted that we could form a partnership with Antofénol – a technology leader in innovative eco-extractions,” says Dr. Marielle Le Maire, Senior Vice President, Global Head of BU Actives & Botanicals from Cosmetic Ingredients Division at Symrise. “We expect this to provide us with new sustainable and innovative cosmetic ingredients and plant-based unique developments for our Scent & Care segment. We also expect that our food component production will benefit from greener and faster extraction technologies.”

Strong demand for sustainable products

The collaboration started to target the continuous increase in customer and consumer demands for naturalness, environmentally friendly and resources preserving manufacturing conditions. Sustainable and natural products from up-cycling of renewable side streams with good traceability play a decisive role in Symrise’s commercial success. The partnership strengthens the Holzminden Group’s position with regard to natural products in the Scent & Care segment and opens up new application areas in the Flavor & Nutrition segment.

“Environmentally friendly manufactured products form an important pillar of our sustainability strategy,” says Dr. Martina Herrmann, Director Phytochemistry Global Innovation Cosmetic Ingredients. “Our collaboration allows us to apply Antofénol’s highly specialized eco-extraction technologies in the lab as well as on an industrial scale, so we can expand our internal capacities and take advantage of new opportunities for product development.”

“In the frame of our custom manufacturing activity, we have started to work with Symrise 2 years ago on several projects. As the result of the trust-based relationship created between our teams, this 3 years R&D collaboration with a famous global leader is the recognition of the added value of our extraction technology for natural ingredients,” says Fanny Rolet, Founder and CEO of Antofénol. “Together with Fabrice de Panthou, Business Director, we are particularly proud to collaborate with a company driven, like us, by science and innovation.”

Symrise is recruiting recent college graduates from North America and Latin America to join the renowned Perfumery School of Symrise to become the next generation of fragrance creatives. The company wishes for a diverse demographic of aspiring fragrance experts to bring fresh perspectives that add new understanding to the evolving needs and expectations of customers and consumers.

“Throughout its 225 years of fragrance history Symrise has always committed to investing in and nurturing the perfumery talent of the future. Innovation is in our DNA, and we look forward to seeing this next generation of noses combine our existing knowledge and expertise with their own unique ideas to create exciting scent experiences for consumers and drive new narratives and business opportunities for our customers”, says Eder Ramos, Global President Fragrance Division.

A new community of creative entrepreneurs

Symrise is looking for perfumery students from North America and Latin America to start their creative and passionate career in the fragrance industry. As perfumery converges arts and sciences similar to architecture, the students will need a strong background in science, technology, engineering and arts and/or mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) Symrise is searching for scientific minds with an artistic heart. Experienced master and senior perfumers will support the talented young students during their training.

The course will include studying 2,500 ingredients, to learn how to create complex fragrance compositions and then incorporate them into various applications. Students will apply this knowledge practically, learning to identify individual raw materials in fragrance compositions and becoming skilled at fragrance creation and development.

Bringing Symrise customers new perspectives and opportunities

Symrise recognizes that the world of fragrance is always changing and expects the upcoming class of perfumer trainees to contribute creative ideas and modern fragrance solutions to the diverse and discerning Symrise consumer base. They can also build on the rich Symrise heritage that has shaped the world of perfumery with significant innovations including exquisite de Laire bases, the first synthetic fragrance materials and the first commercialized fragrances developed with artificial intelligence.

“The Symrise credo of ‘Better Living Through Scent’ embraces the concepts of inclusion and equality, ensuring all people feel seen, heard and represented. We look forward to the modern perspective this next generation of young perfumers will bring to Symrise’s diverse fragrance solutions”, explains Beatrice Favre Bulle, Senior Vice President Perfumery Excellence & Sustainability, Global Fragrances & Ingredients Management, Scent & Care Division at Symrise.

A global experience

The program starts in April 2022 and spans 5 years of rigorous training. This includes 3 years learning the foundations of perfumery at Symrise Holzminden, followed by 2 years training on the job at any of Symrise’s 11 creative centers around the world. Students will pair with mentors who will inform their training and provide guidance as they develop their own signature style of formulating fragrance.

Once they have completed their five years of training, the new noses will join Symrise’s North American and Latin American perfumery teams. The program offers a unique opportunity to travel and experience living abroad while learning from each other, local experts and master perfumers, and broadening exposure to different cultures and trends.

Symrise is strengthening its team of perfumers. Seven rising talents from four countries recently completed their education successfully at the Symrise Perfumery School. During their four to five years of study, the students learned the perfumer’s craft at several locations around the world. In the future, they will produce creations as perfumers for Symrise in France, China, Brazil and the USA.

The students mastered the final hurdles with flying colors: After the candidates passed their final exams and successfully presented a research project, Symrise appointed Leslie Gauthier, Marine Ipert, Jamie Tan Yuping, Suthathip Thedvichienchai, Emma Yao Wei, Laure Breysse and Suzy Le Helley as perfumers. In front of a panel of experts, they demonstrated what they had learned during their four years of study. The examination task required the students to make one soap, one hair rinse and one fabric softener using jasmine, lily of the valley and ylang-ylang blossoms. The panel was very satisfied with the result.

In the second part of the exam, the students presented their final theses, called “masterpieces” in the lingo of the program, to the jury. Similar to producing a doctoral thesis, this required them to complete an independent research project. The examiners looked for creativity, individual style and the ability to use raw materials from the palette used by Symrise. The students confidently met these requirements, too. For example, Suzy Le Helley extracted a new fragrance substance from longoza seeds. This plant grows in Madagascar.

“A good perfumer sets trends with his or her own fragrance creations,” said Achim Daub, President Scent & Care at Symrise. “Our graduates gain this ability by studying at the industry-renowned Symrise Perfumery School.”

International assignments make students experts in regional characteristics

The students study at various locations during their time with the Symrise Perfumery School. The two compulsory years of study in Holzminden are complemented by assignments in the most influential creative centers in Europe, the USA, Brazil, Mexico and Shanghai. In this way, they learn the basics of perfumery. This includes comprehensive knowledge of the various techniques and chemical processes used to extract fragrance substances.

The curriculum also includes intensive raw material studies and creative work. With this course content, the young noses were able to gradually acquire knowledge about fragrance compositions, for which they gained more in-depth practical experience in the final part of their training in actual customer projects. “During their study abroad, our students gain experience and therefore understanding of the particular characteristics of global markets, consumers and cultures,” said Béatrice Favre-Bulle, Senior Vice President Perfumery Excellence & Sustainability, Global Fragrances & Ingredients Management, Scent & Care Division at Symrise. “These experiences help them to create fragrances that meet the preferences of modern consumers and especially millennials.”

Exciting locations around the globe

The new perfumers are using their knowledge in their current locations in France, China, Brazil and the USA. The focus of the course of study played an important role in choosing the respective locations. Leslie Gauthier, Marine Ipert, Jamie Tan Yuping, Emma Yao Wie and Suthathip Thedvichienchai completed the five-year Symrise Perfumery School program. In the future, they will create fragrances for different product categories and craft their own style.

Laure Breysse and Suzy Le Helley chose the four-year Global Fragrances and Ingredients Management (GFIM) program. Symrise needs their expertise for creative solutions and alternative raw materials to adapt fragrance creations to evolving regulatory requirements. “The time at the Symrise Perfumery School means a lot to me. We students grew together as a team,” said Suzy Le Helley. “I can’t wait to work with my colleagues on global customer projects.”

While the seven perfumers have now completed their apprenticeships, the Perfumery School is preparing a new generation of talents for graduation. The three students from the class of 2017 have just passed their intermediate academic exams and have been appointed as junior perfumers. Another six trainees started their studies in January 2019 and are at the beginning of their inspiring fragrance journey.
