The Estée Lauder Companies has announced the passing of Chairman Emeritus Leonard A. Lauder on June 14, at the age of 92, surrounded by family.

Mr. Lauder was born in 1933 in New York City, the oldest son of Estée and Joseph H. Lauder, the founders of The Estée Lauder Companies. He was a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and the Officer Candidate School of the United States Navy. Mr. Lauder studied at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and as a Navy reservist, for which the U.S. Navy Supply Corps Foundation later recognized him with its Distinguished Alumni Award. He formally joined Estée Lauder in 1958, and for more than six decades, Mr. Lauder was a visionary and an innovator, helping transform the business from a handful of products sold under a single brand in U.S. stores to the multi-brand, global leader in prestige beauty that it is today.

“Throughout his life, my father worked tirelessly to build and transform the beauty industry, pioneering many of the innovations, trends, and best practices that are foundational to the industry today,” said William P. Lauder, son and Chair, Board of Directors, The Estée Lauder Companies. “He was the most charitable man I have ever known, believing that art and education belonged to everyone, and championing the fight against diseases such as Alzheimer’s and breast cancer. Above all, my father was a man who practiced kindness with everyone he met. His impact was enormous. He believed that employees were the heart and soul of our company, and they adored him and moments spent with him. His warmth and thoughtfulness made an imprint on our company, the industry, and, of course, our family. Together with my family, The Estée Lauder Companies, and the countless people he touched, we celebrate his extraordinary life.”

Mr. Lauder served as President of The Estée Lauder Companies from 1972 to 1995 and as Chief Executive Officer from 1982 through 1999. He was named Chairman in 1995 and served in that role through June 2009. Throughout his tenure at the company, Mr. Lauder consistently challenged the status quo, developing and implementing innovative sales and marketing programs that revolutionized the beauty industry. He created the company’s first research and development laboratory, brought in professional management at every level, and was the driving force behind The Estée Lauder Companies’ international expansion, helping to increase the company’s sales and profits exponentially.

A legendary brand builder, Mr. Lauder led the launch of many brands including Aramis, Clinique, and Lab Series, among others. Until his death, he remained deeply involved in the company’s acquisition strategy, including the acquisitions of Aveda, Bobbi Brown, Jo Malone London, La Mer, and M∙A∙C.

Speaking for The Estée Lauder Companies, President and Chief Executive Officer Stéphane de La Faverie said, “Leonard Lauder was beloved by many and will be missed tremendously. To our employees at The Estée Lauder Companies, he was an inspiration and a champion. To the industry, he was an icon and pioneer, earning respect worldwide. His energy and vision helped shape our company and will continue to do so for generations to come. He was a deeply compassionate leader who cared profoundly about every person in the company. I feel privileged to have worked with Leonard, who has been the best mentor I could have dreamt to learn from. He will be remembered by all of us.”

During his many years as Chairman Emeritus, Mr. Lauder was closely involved in the business and day-to-day operations of the company and was a constant fixture at The Estée Lauder Companies’ global headquarters in New York and at our stores and counters across the globe until the time of his death. Mr. Lauder believed that each of his colleagues was like a member of his family and treated them as such. The values that continue to set the company apart are the values he so strongly believed in and embodied, most notably generosity of spirit and kindness toward all. Perhaps the role Mr. Lauder was most proud of was the unofficial one as The Estée Lauder Companies’ “chief teaching officer.” He believed that a company’s wealth is its people and focused on mentoring and fostering growth within the company’s diverse talent pool. He believed strongly in the importance of recognition and gratitude and was a tireless advocate for employees. At the onset of the global pandemic in 2020, Mr. Lauder was instrumental in setting up the ELC Cares Employee Relief Fund to support the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of employees and their families.

Mr. Lauder was deeply involved in medical research, education, art, foreign policy, and philanthropy, and the marks he made on those worlds were transformational.

Mr. Lauder believed passionately in the importance of public access to art and museums, which inspired his philosophy that the primary role of a collector was to conserve, not possess. He was a long-time supporter of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met) and, in 2013, pledged his 78-piece collection of Cubist art to the museum in the largest single philanthropic gift in the Met’s history. He later added five major works to that promised gift. In concert with his Cubist collection donation, he helped establish the Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art at the Met to support a robust program of fellowships, focused exhibitions, and public lectures. Along with his prominent presence at the Met, he also served as the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Chairman Emeritus and a trustee from 1977 to 2011. Throughout his life, he donated works of art and endowed curatorial positions and research departments to numerous institutions.

Mr. Lauder was a long-time advocate of cancer research and served as Honorary Chairman of the board of directors at the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the organization his beloved late-wife, Evelyn H. Lauder, founded in 1993. He also championed the fight against Alzheimer’s by co-founding and leading the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation with his brother, Ronald S. Lauder, which supports cutting-edge drug research. Mr. Lauder remained actively engaged with these organizations until his death, and they were extraordinarily dear to his heart.

Remembering his brother, Ronald S. Lauder, Chairman, Clinique Laboratories, LLC at The Estée Lauder Companies, said, “Leonard was a wonderful brother and a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, colleague, and friend. But his legacy extends far beyond being the heart of our family. His impact will be felt for generations to come thanks to his tireless philanthropy, advocacy, and creativity in tackling some of the world’s greatest challenges. The number of lives he touched and positively impacted across all his endeavors is immeasurable. His passion and generosity have inspired us all, and there are no words to express how much he will be missed.”

“My father was a remarkable man, a leader in business, a devoted philanthropist, and a deeply loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather,” said Gary M. Lauder, son and Member, Board of Directors, The Estée Lauder Companies. “His energy, sharp intellect, and generous spirit touched the lives of so many across the world. To me, he was also a constant source of encouragement, wisdom, and love. His legacy is vast, not only in the beauty industry, but in the countless lives improved by his charitable efforts and his passionate commitment to the arts, education, and healthcare. He was not only well-respected and admired, but he was also adored by his employees and colleagues. This affection stands out for me. While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his extraordinary life, his lasting contributions, and the values he instilled in all of us: integrity, curiosity, and the importance of giving back. He will be missed more than words can express.”

Mr. Lauder believed in the value of education and supported a variety of academic institutions. He was an emeritus trustee of the University of Pennsylvania and a founding member of the board of governors of its Joseph H. Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies, along with his brother, Ronald. His passion for education continued into the public space, having supported several schools in the New Yorkarea and receiving the honor of being an inductee into the Bronx High School of Science Hall of Fame in 2017. When the pandemic in 2020 magnified the nation’s acute shortage of quality primary care in underserved communities, Mr. Lauder worked with the University of Pennsylvania to create a tuition-free program to educate nurse practitioners. His donation of $125 million, the largest gift ever to an American nursing school, made possible the Leonard A. Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Program at the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Lauder worked throughout his life to promote dialogue among governments, political and non-governmental organizations, and the public and private sectors, believing that this interdisciplinary dialogue is crucial to progress. He served as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and as Chairman Emeritus and a lifetime trustee on the board of directors at the Aspen Institute. He felt that public service was a person’s duty and, in addition to his time in the U.S. Navy, later served on the Advisory Committee for Trade Negotiations under President Ronald Reagan from 1983–1987.

Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Lauder was honored with a myriad of awards, including the “Lone Sailor” Award given by the U.S. Navy Supply Corps Foundation, the Légion d’Honneur given by the government of France, the Women’s Leadership Award given by the Lincoln Center Corporate Fund Women’s Leadership Council, and the Palazzo Strozzi Renaissance Man of the Year Award. In 2020, he was inducted into the Retail Hall of Fame by the World Retail Congress.

The Lauder family received the esteemed 2011 Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in recognition of its long-standing commitment to philanthropy and public service. In 2014, Mr. Lauder was named a Living Landmark by the New York Landmarks Conservancy. Mr. Lauder and Ms. Glickman Lauder also received the Gordon Parks Foundation Patron of the Arts Award in 2016.

Mr. Lauder shared many of the lessons he learned in business and life in his memoir, The Company I Keep: My Life in Beauty, published to great acclaim in 2020.

He was married to Evelyn H. Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice President at The Estée Lauder Companies and the Founder of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, from 1959 until she passed away in 2011. On January 1, 2015, Mr. Lauder married Judy Glickman Lauder, a philanthropist and internationally recognized photographer whose work is represented in more than 300 public and private collections, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Whitney Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the United States Holocaust Museum. Mr. Lauder considered himself lucky in love and believed that lightning really could strike twice.

From the beginning, he was devoted to family. He loved his parents and adored his brother, Ronald, and the family Ronald built with Jo Carole. His nieces and their families held a special place in his heart. Mr. Lauder was grateful to his wife, Judy, for widening his family circle and cherished his stepchildren and their families. But mostly, he was extraordinarily proud of both of his sons, their families, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved them so dearly.

Mr. Lauder was a true visionary, fearless leader, and cherished friend to so many. He was the beacon of our company and the north star of an entire industry. The world is a better place because Leonard Lauder was in it. The Estée Lauder Companies extends our deepest sympathies to the entire Lauder family during this exceedingly difficult time.

Mr. Lauder is survived by his wife, Judy Glickman Lauder; his son William P. Lauder; his son Gary M. Lauder and wife, Laura Lauder; five grandchildren, Rachel, Danielle, Djuna-Bear, Joshua, Eliana, two great-grandchildren, many stepchildren and step grandchildren, as well as his brother, Ronald S. Lauder, and wife, Jo Carole Lauder, and their daughters, Aerin Lauder and Jane Lauder.

A private service will be held for friends and family. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation.

George Ledes will offer his own reflections of this industry giant in his newsletter this week.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) held its annual Symposium and Awards Luncheon today at the New York Hilton Midtown. Hosted by ELLE Magazine Editor in Chief Nina Garcia, this year’s luncheon honored fashion legend Vera Wang with the Sandra Taub Humanitarian Award in recognition of her enduring dedication to BCRF and her profound philanthropic spirit, presented by Donna Karan.

BCRF 2019 Award Recipients Dr. Eric Winer amd Vera Wang

The Jill Rose Award for scientific excellence was presented to Dr. Eric Winer, of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, for his outstanding contributions as a clinician-scientist which have revolutionized the landscape of breast cancer treatments.

BCRF awarded $66 million in grants to nearly 275 researchers from around the world. Nearly 200 of these grantees were in attendance to be recognized for their innovative projects and contributions to the field. At a scientific retreat the day prior, researchers were provided the rare and critical opportunity to collaborate with their colleagues, across institutions, across disciplines, and across the world.

“I have always been drawn to BCRF in no small part due to its founder, the inimitable Evelyn Lauder, a woman I so admired,” said Vera Wang as she accepted her honor. “In a way this award today both reflects and belongs to her.”

Myra Biblowit, William P. Lauder, Nina Garcia, Donna Karan and Kinga Lampert

“Back in 2015, I discovered I had a gene mutation that put me at a high risk for breast cancer,” revealed Nina Garcia. “And when you get that news, you think, ‘Why me? What does this mean?’ I would wake up and think, ‘well, when is the day when I’m going to wake up and be diagnosed with cancer?’ Thanks to research, I had options, and it breaks my heart when I know that some women do not have options.”

The day began with a symposium moderated by BCRF Co-Scientific Directors, Drs. Larry Norton of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Judy Garber of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The panelists included Drs. Eric Winer of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Dawn Hershman of Columbia University, and Neil Iyengar of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Honorary Co-Chairs of the event included Kinga Lampert, Leonard A. Lauder, and William P. Lauder. Event Co-Chairs included Madelyn Bucksbaum Adamson, Roberta M. Amon, Anne H. Bass, Amy Goldman Fowler, Roslyn Goldstein, Dee Ocleppo Hilfiger, Gail Hilson, Shelly Kivell, Elyse Lacher, Aerin Lauder, Marigay McKee, Wendi Rose, Arlene Taub, and Simone Winston.

HarperCollins Publishers announced the acquisition of a new book by the business leader who revolutionized the prestige beauty industry, Leonard A. Lauder. The deal for world rights was negotiated between VP & Publisher of Harper Business, Hollis Heimbouch and Robert Barnett of Williams & Connolly LLP. The new book, currently untitled, will be published in 2020.

The name Estée Lauder is synonymous with prestige beauty. The phenomenal success of this global empire—which began in his mother’s, Estée Lauder, kitchen—is largely due to the genius of Leonard Lauder and the brilliant team he assembled. Founded in 1946, The Estée Lauder Companies is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and marketers of prestige skin care, makeup, fragrance and hair care products, with annual sales of over $13 billion. The Estée Lauder Companies’ diverse portfolio is comprised of more than 25 brands sold in 150 countries and territories.

Lauder’s book is a personal memoir about growing up with the company and his famous mother, an insider’s account of building a global empire and a business book with pragmatic lessons on business, philanthropy, leadership and life. The book will be filled with extraordinary stories spanning fifty years of creating beauty and the lessons he learned along the way.

Lauder’s influence extends far beyond The Estée Lauder Companies. His strategic approach to philanthropy is a model of how to lead and leverage change in areas as diverse as museums, children’s playgrounds and breast cancer research and awareness—for which his late wife Evelyn co-created the iconic Pink Ribbon advocacy concept and campaign and founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

As Lauder says, “Good ideas never go out of date: great ideas last forever.” In his thoughtful, warm-hearted, and wry voice, Lauder will share his great ideas and the secrets of his success—as well as lively stories, sharp observations and practical lessons about leadership and life.

The 2019 Fragrance Foundation Awards—an annual event which celebrates the extraordinary talent and achievements of the fragrance world, was held on Wednesday, June 5th, in the David H. Koch Theatre at Lincoln Center in NYC. Hosted by award-winning actress Jane Krakowski,  the Awards honored iconic designer Tom Ford, IFF Master Perfumer Dominique Ropion, and Nest Fragrances Founder & CEO Laura Slatkin.

Actor Henry Golding, the dashing star of Crazy Rich Asians, presented the Award to Mr. Ford who was inducted into The Fragrance Foundation Hall of Fame. Accepting the award — his seventeenth Fragrance Foundation Award, Ford spoke eloquently about his life-long love of fragrance.  “Since I was a child, I was obsessed with the smell of things,” he confided in a video tribute to his work. Before the end of the night, he would go on to win his eighteenth Fragrance Foundation Award, for Tom Ford Lost Cherry, which was named Women’s Luxury Fragrance of the Year.

Dominique Ropion, Master Perfumer at International Flavors & Fragrances Inc (IFF), was celebrated as the 2019 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement, Perfumer Award. The award was presented by Nicolas Mirzayantz, Group President of Fragrances at IFF. When Ropion — who has created such classic scents as Mugler’s Alien and Frederic Malle Portrait of A Lady. took the stage, the audience burst into thunderous applause and standing ovation for the great “master of flowers.”  Also, as a historic first for The Fragrance Foundation Awards, the evening featured an exclusive ambient fragrance created by Ropion, called Fleurs d’un Soir, which translates to Flowers of the Evening, and included notes of orris root, rose, and jasmine.

NEST Fragrances Founder & CEO, Laura Slatkin, was recognized as this year’s “Game Changer.” Her husband Harry Slatkin, presented the award with a heartfelt speech about her hard work and immense impact on home fragrance and on autism – a cause near and dear to their family. After a brief film celebrating Laura’s achievements, with testimonials from luminaries such as Leonard Lauder and Tommy Hilfiger, The Fragrance Foundation announced its new Give Back initiative will support NEXT for Autism

The star-studded event organized by Fragrance Foundation President Linda G. Levy was attended by such talent as Grammy Nominee Bebe Rexha; actress Michelle Pfeiffer – who recently launched her own line of fine fragrances with IFF called Henry Rose; designer Jason Wu, accompanied by Victoria’s Secret model Martha Hunt; DJ, author and founder of HBFIT Hannah Bronfman, CoverGirl and dietitian Maye Musk; Harper’s Bazaar’s Glenda Bailey, Cosmopolitan’s Jessica Pels, Carine Roitfeld – who also just launched her own line of fragrances called 7 Lovers, and Martha Stewart.

Between awards, Jerry Vittoria, Fragrance Foundation Chairman of the Board and President of Fine Fragrance Worldwide at Firmenich delivered a rousing speech about the future of fragrance and the challenges facing the industry, calling crucial attention to issues in the American market, where “many American consumers are intimidated by fragrances [and] some have been led to believe fragrances are dangerous.” He counseled that “we must find a way forward with smart transparency,” and reminded the assembled audience of industry leaders that “our united voices on this topic will be as important as any award given tonight.”

Event raised a record breaking $1 million + for lifesaving breast cancer research

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation raised more than $1.1 million at the 16th annual Palm Beach Hot Pink Luncheon & Symposium, a record for the event. Host Aerin Lauder and philanthropists from across the Sunshine State were among the 450 guests gathered at The Breakers Palm Beach to hear from preeminent breast cancer researchers and enjoy a seasonal fashion presentation by event underwriter Neiman Marcus. Proceeds from this highly-anticipated annual luncheon help fund BCRF’s global legion of researchers 300-strong, including four scientists based in Florida. The Foundation proudly stands today as the largest private funder of breast cancer research in the world.

“When my Aunt, Evelyn Lauder, established BCRF 25 years ago, she envisioned a world free of breast cancer. Today, we are much closer to achieving that vision. There are 3.5 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S., and none of this progress would be possible without you,” said Aerin Lauder, addressing the Palm Beach community.

Notable attendees included: breast cancer survivor and tennis champion Martina Navratilova, Leonard & Judy Lauder, Kinga Lampert, Tom Quick, Laura & Harry Slatkin, Gigi & Harry Benson, Emilia Fanjul, Lori Bernstein, Olga Blavatnik, Talbott Maxey, Felicia Taylor, Jackie Weld Drake, Ginger Feuer, Christina Baker, Cathie Black, and Ellen Newhouse.

This year’s symposium, entitled the “Scientific Revolution in Breast Cancer,” featured Dr. Larry Norton, BCRF Co-Scientific Director, of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; Dr. Judy Garber, BCRF Co-Scientific Director, of Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women’s, Harvard Medical School; and, Dr. Mina Bissell of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

“I’m thrilled by the groundswell of support from our friends here in Palm Beach,” said BCRF Honorary Chairman, Leonard A. Lauder. “BCRF funds research, and only research. It’s what drives us. Every breakthrough since 1993 can be traced back to BCRF funding, and we’ll keep propelling that progress forward.”

BCRF’s distinguished Palm Beach Luncheon & Symposium leadership included: BCRF’s Honorary Co-Chair, Leonard A. Lauder, and Board Co-Chair Kinga Lampert; Palm Beach Hot Pink Luncheon & Symposium Lead Chairs: Eileen C. Burns, Raysa Fanjul; Founding Chairs: Sandra G. On Thursday, Leonard Lauder, Chairman Emeritus of The Estée Lauder Companies, invited friends and family to the Salon of their Fifth Avenue headquarters, to spritz Annette Green with love and appreciation for her forty years with the Fragrance Foundation and the launch of her new book, Spritzing to Success. In addition to industry veteran Rose Marie Bravo – who wrote the preface to the book, and Estée Lauder’s Jane Hudis, John Demsey and Alexandra Trower, guests included Model Carmen Dell’Oriface, Fragrance Foundation President Linda Levy, MANE’s Westly Morris, FIT’s Stephan Kanlian and Virginia Bonofiglio, CEW’s Carlotta Jacobson, Marc Rosen, Dr. Irena Mausner, Donald Loftus, Lawrence Aiken and George Ledes.

Recognized as one of America’s leading fragrance authorities and futurists, Annette Green served as Executive Director and President of the Fragrance Foundation, a non-profit educational organization, for 40 years.  In 1991, she was elected secretary of the board of directors, on which she has served since 1984. Upon her retirement in 2003, the board of directors named her president emeritus. Her new memoir, Spritzing to Success With the Woman Who Brought an Industry to Its Senses, focuses on the concepts she instituted to help drive the small six-figure industry to its current multi-billion-dollar position in the global marketplace.

Spritzing to Success is an inspirational love story that eventually changed the fortunes of the American fragrance industry, written Green as a reminiscence of a career path that zigzagged through the social changes of the early fifties to a forty-year dedication to the world of fragrance. It reveals the emotional, psychological, and knowledge-based essentials that have utmost relevance to those who strive to find their own North Star in the demanding, unpredictable marketplace of today.

Green traces her journey, which impacted women’s rights, scientific and educational breakthroughs, star-studded alliances, art-world recognition, and global alliances. Her fearless, openhearted approach was supported by a changing array of mentors over the years.

She took on the ten-year challenge of saving the defunct Fragrance Foundation (the nonprofit, educational arm of the US fragrance industry) pro bono in the mid-1950’s. President of her own marketing agency at the time, Annette Green Associates, she created strategies that slowly but surely repositioned the industry for stunning growth that reverberated around the world.

In Spritzing to Success, Green shares joyous experiences, fascinating people she encountered, and always, the endless possibilities of the creative, dedicated mindset.

She details the challenges she faced and the triumphs, which she believes can serve to turn those who are overwhelmed by the dramatic technological and global changes impacting the workplace to rethink, reinvent, and reinvest in the unique talents only they can bring to bear. Her emphasis throughout the book is self-reliance, love, dedication, passion, and courage. Her ultimate message is to adopt the wisdom of Joseph Campbell, who advised us all to follow our bliss.

This week, Saks Fifth Avenue opened its highly anticipated new 32,000-square-foot beauty space on the second floor of its New York Flagship with more than 120 color cosmetics, skincare, fragrance and wellness brands —58 of which are new to the floor.

With a significant focus on experiences, the floor is approximately 40-percent larger and now includes 15 new spa rooms along with services such as medi-spa treatments, facials, massages, manicures, brow services, a flower shop and more. By moving the Beauty department to the second floor, Saks is evolving the way customers shop and experience beauty.

“As part of Saks’ overall growth strategy, we continue to look for ways to innovate, create and disrupt. The bold decision to move Beauty to the second floor, from the traditional main floor model, allowed us to build a one-of-a-kind destination enabling Saks to create the epitome of an experiential beauty floor,” said Marc Metrick, president, Saks Fifth Avenue. “We continue to apply the principles of what we call The New Luxury to everything we do. What we’ve done with Beauty gives the customer a warmer environment, differentiated from what they can get anywhere else and creates a reason to come to Saks and experience our brand.”

“What makes this new beauty concept special is the exclusive services and unparalleled offering of brands we are providing to our clients. We curated the floor to represent the best innovations in beauty and wellness in a truly specialized space,” said Tracy Margolies, Chief Merchant, Saks Fifth Avenue. “By offering beauty and wellness workshops and panels, Saks is taking a holistic approach to make our clients feel great both inside and out.”

STORE DESIGN

The new beauty floor is the latest step in the New York flagship’s Grand Renovation. Saks redefined the department store concept with the revolutionary migration of Beauty from the main floor to the second floor. The Saks Store Planning and Design team, in collaboration with Gensler, spearheaded the design focusing on opening up the space, creating broad sightlines across the floor and modernizing traditional finishes that complement the brand’s heritage. The team used custom agglomerate white stone flooring from Italy throughout and restored original windows facing Fifth Avenue, 49th Street, and 50th Street, allowing natural light to the floor and north and south facing views of the city.
