The Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) hosted their Sixteenth Annual Connoisseur’s Dinner, honoring Leonard A. Lauder, Ronald S. Lauder, William Lauder, Gary Lauder, Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer, and Jane Lauder in celebration of their historic $200 million gift to the ADDF, announced earlier this year.

The event, held at Sotheby’s in New York City, raised nearly $3 million, every dollar of which will go directly toward the innovative science that fuels the ADDF’s mission to accelerate the development of drugs to prevent, treat, and cure Alzheimer’s disease. The Lauders’ extraordinary gift ensures the ADDF will be able to continue our work until we have fulfilled our goal, ultimately changing the way the world ages.

Aerin Lauder, Lori Kanter Tritsch, Danielle Lauder, William P. Lauder, Rachel Lauder, Jane Lauder, Ronald S. Lauder, Jo Carole Lauder, Gary M. Lauder, Laura Lauder

Celebrated author and journalist Walter Isaacson presented the Lauder family with the Chairman’s Award. “Since Leonard and Ronald Lauder founded the ADDF 25 years ago, the family has shown an unmatched dedication to curing this devastating disease, infusing the Lauder spirit of innovation, quality, and excellence into the ADDF’s quest to identify and support the most promising research. It is an honor to recognize their efforts tonight.”

Leonard Lauder said, “Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t affect just one person, it impacts entire families. That is why it is so meaningful for my family to be honored by the ADDF, an organization my brother and I began because of our mother. She inspired us to do everything we could to fight and prevent this disease and I am proud to see my children and nieces pick up that torch.”

Ronald Lauder added, “We are proud of the impact the ADDF has made over the past two decades. The progress we are seeing in prevention, diagnostics, and drug development makes me confident the innovative research we support will continue to build momentum until we eradicate this disease for future generations.”

The ADDF’s Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer Dr. Howard Fillit remarked on the incredible progress of the past year and the ADDF’s plan to continue this momentum. “There has never been a more exciting time in Alzheimer’s research, and we would not be here without the vision, commitment, and leadership of the Lauder family. Their remarkable gift comes at a critical time, with a new era dawning in the field and the ADDF leading the charge to build upon recent breakthroughs. Our laser focus on a precision medicine and combination therapy approach will revolutionize treatment and stop Alzheimer’s in its tracks.”

The black-tie event featured an exclusive preview of Sotheby’s Impressionist, Modern, and Contemporary Art sales and wine pairings presented by Sotheby’s Wine.

Notable guests included:Jo Carole Lauder, Laura Lauder, Danielle Lauder, Rachel Lauder-Lyons, Lori Kanter-Tritsch, Fabrizio Freda, Karen Lauder, Nancy Goodes, Jane Hertzmark Hudis, Walter Isaacson,  Bonnie Lautenberg, Heidi and Tom McWilliams, Ann Tisch, Barbara Tober, Paula Zahn, Ginger and Larry Leeds, Hilary and Wilbur Ross, Eleanora Kennedy, Sharon Loeb and John Paulson and Alina de Almeida.

The Estée Lauder Companies has announced the first-year grant recipients for WRITING CHANGE, its global three-year, US$3M literacy impact initiative inspired by Amanda Gorman, the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history, award-winning writer, and Estée Lauder Global Changemaker and Brand Ambassador.

“I am so thrilled that the work of these worthy organizations can continue to reach more communities through WRITING CHANGE. Representation in literacy matters. For youth, literacy is a pathway to social expression that leads to progress. I truly believe that words lead to actions that can change the world. I am so proud of the work that I know is to come, and I look forward to this first year of impact through WRITING CHANGE.” – Amanda Gorman, Estée Lauder Global Changemaker

Amanda is a role model for an entire generation of new leaders, and we are deeply inspired by her energy, passion, and thought-leadership. We’re honored and excited to be behind these incredible organizations making amazing crossroads in literacy.” – William P. Lauder, Executive Chairman, The Estée Lauder Companies

SUSTAINED PROGRESS IN LITERACY

Literacy builds self-efficacy and esteem, unlocks opportunity, and empowers people to participate fully in their community and in society. Yet, despite the steady rise in literacy rates over the years, more than 773 million children and adults1 around the world are illiterate, most of whom are girls and women. In the United States, over 43 million adults2 lack functional literacy skills and nearly two-thirds of high school graduates are still reading below grade level.

The COVID-19 pandemic has further disrupted education and magnified the pre-existing inequalities in the access to tools, resources, and programming that are essential to sustained progress in literacy and learning, particularly in low-income or rural communities and in communities of color.

We are so proud to launch WRITING CHANGE. This program is deeply tied to our company’s long-standing commitment to the advancement of education, particularly for women and girls – and was deeply inspired by Amanda’s belief in literacy as a pathway to change and its mission. Amanda herself demonstrates the power of storytelling and the impact of words on the lives of young people and how words can be a catalyst to effect change.” – Fabrizio Freda, President and CEO, The Estée Lauder Companies

Over three years, WRITING CHANGE will invest in organizations working to close the literacy gap and support efforts that work to advance systemic changes across three focus pillars:

  • Access: Equitable access to literacy programs to ensure education is a fundamental right, especially for the communities in need.
  • Advocacy: The publication and advocacy of diverse writers and young leaders to advance representation in literature at all levels.
  • ArtisticExpression in Youth: Community programming that advances creativity and cultivates a passion for artistic and social expression in youth through writing, particularly for girls of color.

The WRITING CHANGE initiative will track and evaluate grantee impact on an annual basis in close coordination with the nonprofit partners, including robust reporting on programmatic progress across each pillar.

FIRST-YEAR GRANTEES

In its first year, WRITING CHANGE will focus on U.S. organizations with the potential to expand globally in years two and three. The WRITING CHANGE grant recipients were selected based on their proven ability to catalyze impact for youth, families, and diverse communities, demonstrated ability to collaborate across the nonprofit sector, and their ability to broaden their programmatic scale through WRITING CHANGE’s pillars of access, advocacy, and artistic expression. In its first year WRITING CHANGE will fund five U.S.-based organizations:

ACCESS

  • American Library Association (ALA): The largest library organization in the world, ALA works to promote libraries and library education in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all. Funds from WRITING CHANGE will support an innovative pilot project for twelve libraries in the U.S. to partner with local artists to implement arts programming that builds literacy and digital skills for distinct populations – including youth at risk of low educational or employment attainment. The ALA digital access program aims to expand libraries’ reach into their community and increase libraries’ visibility as a path to educational persistence, economic mobility, and civic participation. The project emphasizes diverse artistic expression as a platform for community and aims to reach approximately 3,600 individuals in its first year.

ADVOCACY AND REPRESENTATION

  • We Need Diverse Books (WNDB): A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that runs twelve exciting initiatives united under one goal – to combat systemic racism and oppression by creating a world where everyone can find themselves on the pages of a book. Through support from WRITING CHANGE, WNDB will further its work in tailored grants, mentorship programs, workshops, and community building, with particular support provided to advance The Native Fund, The Black Creatives Fund, and the Revisions Workshop.

ENGAGING YOUTH IN WRITING AS A FORM OF ARTISTIC AND SOCIAL EXPRESSION

  • Girls Write Now: For 25 years, Girls Write Now has been breaking down barriers of gender, race, age, and poverty to mentor the next generation of writers and leaders who are impacting businesses, shaping culture, and creating change. They match young adults – over 90% of color, 90% high need, 75% immigrant or first generation, and 25% LGBTQIA+/gender expansive – with professional writers and multimedia makers as their personal mentors and immerse them in a supportive and networked community of writers, for life. Through support from WRITING CHANGE, Girls Write Now will aim to create a greater national presence in its core programming and Writing 360 program with an aim to reach 600 additional youth in the next year.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

The WRITING CHANGE initiative will also fund two additional local community-based grants to Los Angeles-based organization WriteGirl and Minneapolis-based organization MIGIZI.

  • WriteGirl: A Los Angeles-based creative writing and mentoring organization, WriteGirl spotlights the power of a girl and her pen. WriteGirl represents a community of more than 400 girls and 400 volunteer women writers who serve as creative writing mentors. 100% of WriteGirl graduating seniors have entered college, many on full or partial scholarships. WRITING CHANGE funding will support literacy-based programs for underserved girls through the WriteGirl Core Mentoring Program reaching girls with creative writing workshops, one-to-one mentoring by professional women, leadership development, and college/career-focused resources.
  • MIGIZI:Based in Minnesota, MIGIZI provides a strong circle of support that nurtures the educational, social, economic, and cultural development of Native American youth. WRITING CHANGE will support MIGIZI’s First Person Production program equipping young Native people with 21st century media skills, teaching them how they can make a positive impact in Native media representation, and providing an arts and media space for emerging storytellers.

Amanda Gorman Named Global Changemaker and Curator of New “WRITING CHANGE” Literacy Initiative for The Estée Lauder Companies

The Estée Lauder Companies will contribute $3M over three years to this inaugural literacy initiative

The Estée Lauder Companies and the Estée Lauder brand announced a three-year partnership with Amanda Gorman, activist, award-winning writer, and the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history. This is the first such multi-year partnership for Amanda and the first integrated partnership by The Estée Lauder Companies and the Estée Lauder brand to acknowledge and celebrate a new generation of leaders inspiring change.

As part of this unprecedented partnership, The Estée Lauder Companies will contribute $3 million over three years to support WRITING CHANGE, a special initiative to advance literacy as a pathway to equality, access, and social change. In addition, Amanda will bring her voice of change to the Estée Lauder brand through campaigns debuting in Spring 2022.

“Our company was founded by an extraordinary woman, Estée Lauder, who paved the way for women everywhere to believe anything is possible. Our first of its kind partnership with Amanda was created under these very same trailblazing ideals,” said Jane Hertzmark Hudis, Executive Group President, The Estée Lauder Companies. “Amanda’s powerful presence and inspirational voice brings hope and confidence to the next generation of leaders. Together, we will create real and meaningful impact through literacy, voice, and self-expression.”

The Estée Lauder Companies and Amanda are united in supporting causes for equality and social impact. The WRITING CHANGE initiative is strongly aligned with the goals of The Estée Lauder Companies and The Estée Lauder Companies Charitable Foundation, which focuses on the well-being of diverse global communities, emphasizing women and girls, supported by the pillars of health, education, and the environment.

“I am honored to partner with The Estée Lauder Companies to activate change through literacy, and to represent a brand founded by such an inspiring and daring woman,” said Amanda Gorman. “Mrs. Estée Lauder shattered glass ceilings as a leader in business 75 years ago. Embracing this spirit, I am delighted that our partnership will help inspire women, girls, and all people around the world to do great things, to disrupt, to be confident, and to be future leaders in whatever path they take.”

“Amanda embodies a new generation and demonstrates the importance and influence of voice,” said Fabrizio Freda, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Estée Lauder Companies. “As a company, we are committed to nurturing the leaders and talent of the future, empowering them to use their voices—and to use them loudly. We are thrilled to partner with Amanda as we embark on this collective journey to strengthen our commitment to girls’ education, helping provide the skills needed to be heard around the globe.”

This year, The Estée Lauder Companies and the Estée Lauder brand celebrate 75 years in business, and today the company is the world’s leader in prestige beauty, supported by a global workforce that is 84% female. In March 2021, the company published its commitments to gender equality and women’s advancement, with initiatives committed to leveling the playing field for all genders inside and outside the company.

Around the world, we are experiencing challenging times as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. This is true for all of those impacted by the disease, especially the breast cancer community who now faces more risk and vulnerability. At The Estée Lauder Companies it has only reaffirmed how crucial it is to support one another as well as medical research, all of those currently living with breast cancer, vulnerable groups who may face a disparity in access to healthcare, and the doctors, nurses and caretakers on the front lines. That’s why The Estée Lauder Companies remains dedicated to The Breast Cancer Campaign and its mission to create a breast cancer-free world.

2020 Breast Cancer Campaign

This year, The Campaign’s creative features a single, bold Pink Ribbon—the globally recognized symbol for breast cancer. However, what it represents goes much further—it’s more than a ribbon, it unites us. It’s a movement, a representation of the global community, and it honors everyone touched by this disease. Every 15 seconds, somewhere in the world, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer1—and that is far too many. We are united in hope around the shared goal: it’s #TimeToEndBreastCancer.

The Estée Lauder Companies has been a leader in the global breast cancer movement since Evelyn H. Lauder co-created the Pink Ribbon and started The Campaign in 1992. Now more than ever, The Estée Lauder Companies champions the wellbeing of the global breast cancer community and will continue to drive funds and inspire action. The Campaign has raised more than $89 million globally for lifesaving research, education, and medical services, with more than $73 million funding 293 medical research grants through the Breast Cancer Research Foundation®, the highest-rated nonprofit breast cancer organization in the U.S. founded by Evelyn H. Lauder in 1993. The BCRF research The Campaign supports in seven countries across the globe spans the entire continuum of cancer research – from basic biology of how healthy cells go awry and become cancer, to developing new diagnostic tests and new treatments, to research to improve a patient’s quality-of-life both during and after treatment.

The Campaign continues to positively impact the global community in numerous ways, including: highlighting the importance of education and early detection by convening discussions with medical experts and producing informative materials; supporting the building and expansion of various care centers to treat breast cancer patients; funding medical resources including access to mammograms and screenings; positively impacting people with breast cancer and their families through support, therapy and counseling programs; and funding medical research throughout the world. In the U.S., breast cancer mortality rates have decreased by 40% among women since the late 1980s,  and today, there are more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors.

William P. Lauder, Executive Chairman of The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., affirms The Campaign’s mission and honors the legacy of his late mother stating, “Our mission to create a breast cancer-free world was the vision of my mother, Evelyn H. Lauder, who started The Breast Cancer Campaign and co-created the Pink Ribbon in 1992, bringing a global level of awareness to the disease through our employees, consumers and partners. Citizenship and sustainability have always been part of The Estée Lauder Companies’ values and The Breast Cancer Campaign represents the best of who we are as a company. Today, I am more proud than ever of the positive impact we have made in the breast cancer community and against the disease. Our dedication remains unwavering, uniting our global community in action, to bring us closer to a cure.”

The Campaign will take the following actions aligned to its mission:

  • Unite people virtually around the globe through digital events and activations to drive engagement and support.
  • Launch a new social media call to action to rally supporters to participate and raise funds for BCRF through the simple action of showing their Pink Ribbon and sharing what it means by using the hashtags #TimeToEndBreastCancer and #ELCdonates
    • For every public, in-feed Instagram or Facebook post during the month of October featuring both hashtags together, @esteelaudercompanies will donate $25 to @bcrfcure up to $100,000—because it’s always been more than a ribbon.
  • Illuminate buildings, monuments and landmarks worldwide in glowing pink lights to raise awareness of breast health, including the Empire State Building, New York City and the Eiffel Tower, Paris.
  • Mobilize employees worldwide to positively impact communities and unite in action to support more than 60 breast cancer organizations around the world.
  • Continue to produce and distribute informative materials and pink ribbons worldwide.
  • Drive donations to BCRF through ELCompanies.com/BreastCancerCampaign.

Elizabeth Hurley, The Campaign’s longtime Global Ambassador shared, “Being a part of the movement to end breast cancer is my most meaningful work. With people around the world still being diagnosed with breast cancer every minute of every day, the disease remains a challenge that we are dedicated to. I joined Evelyn to work on The Campaign shortly after she started it in the early in 1990s, when women still did not talk openly about the disease. She would be so proud of how far we have come and the positive impact we have had! I’ve seen the tremendous progress made through the research we have funded, and spoken to many leaders in the field who all tell me the same thing—that we must continue to fund research to advance science, treatments, and care, to bring us closer to a cure. Evelyn had a vision and knew that long-term impact would be the result of our collective actions. I am honored to wear the Pink Ribbon proudly and be a small part of the global community that is driven to end this disease once and for all.”

This year, 20 of The Estée Lauder Companies’ brands will support The Campaign’s mission: AERIN, Aveda, BECCA, Bobbi Brown, Bumble and bumble, Clinique, Darphin, DKNY, Donna Karan, Dr. Jart+, Estée Lauder, GLAMGLOW, Jo Malone London, La Mer, Lab Series, Origins, Prescriptives, RODIN olio lusso, Smashbox, and Tom Ford Beauty. Each is selling Pink Ribbon Products or make donations to BCRF and/or other charitable organizations around the world.

“The culture and values of The Estée Lauder Companies are exemplified by the inspiring work of The Breast Cancer Campaign, one of our most recognized citizenship initiatives and the cornerstone of our commitment to social responsibility. Particularly during challenging moments, we are reminded of our responsibilities as global citizens to protect the health and wellness of our employees and the communities in which we operate. Our values continue to guide us as we create positive change by supporting all those touched by breast cancer,” said Fabrizio Freda, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc.

The Estée Lauder Companies is united to create a breast cancer-free world until no one loses their life to this disease. Together, The Campaign will continue to raise funds, educate, support, and make a real impact to bring us closer to our mission.

Givaudan has established the Givaudan COVID-19 Communities Fund to enable Givaudan sites to support local communities that have been affected by the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Givaudan is donating at least CHF 1 million to this fund which will give Givaudan employees the opportunity to help those who need it the most, around the world. Colleagues will be able to nominate communities, charities, or services that are in need of additional support. The fund will typically offer amounts to contribute to the provision of:

  • Medical supplies
  • Other essential supplies
  • Support or expertise
  • Other essential funding or services, including when requested by customers, suppliers or other partners

As Givaudan Chief Executive Officer Gilles Andrier said in his letter to employees and customers, friends and neighbors, the company is committed to its role in the supply chain and to be a positive force throughout the pandemic.

We appreciate the critical role that Givaudan has in supporting and protecting vulnerable communities that are struggling to weather this storm. That’s why Givaudan is donating a community fund to address the widespread and damaging implications of the coronavirus. This funding will enable our teams around the world to identify and support local charities, community groups and associations, to help those most in need.

This fund is in addition to the ongoing work of the Givaudan Foundation, which is constantly ensuring that the funding and programs that it offers respond to the challenges of the global pandemic.

Governments and authorities are asking citizens of the world to isolate physically – but all of us are hoping that in doing so, we can join together. That’s what our communities fund is about and why we are continuing to play our role in the critical goods supply chain – Givaudan is committed to its purpose as a force for good throughout this crisis, stated Andrier.

Amidst the continued COVID-19 challenges, Givaudan remains committed to ensuring any impact on its business is minimized so that it can continue to play its role as part of the supply chain for essential items which include food products and beverages, as well as cleaning, disinfecting and sanitizing supplies.

Since 1994, 100 percent of sales from MAC‘s Viva Glam lip stick has raised more than $500 million for those affected by HIV/AIDS virus. Last week, however, the iconic brand announced it will dedicate $10 million towards 250 local organizations, in the U.S. and internationally, that are making a direct impact helping people at risk during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a statement from the brand, this additional support will provide MAC’s existing partners with emergency relief funds to provide vital services, including food delivery, medication support, and testing and treating diagnosed COVID-19 cases, especially among the immunocompromised. But while this expands the Viva Glam mission, it doesn’t mean its focus has completely shifted.

“Viva Glam has never been about one cause, but about support to vulnerable communities. It was created many years ago simply as a hardship fund for people who needed safety nets,” John Demsey, chairman of the MAC Viva Glam Fund and executive group president of The Estée Lauder Companies, said in the statement. “To leverage this 100-percent giving model to help people affected by COVID-19 is a continuation of the principles VIVA GLAM was founded on from its inception.”

Viva Glam spokesperson Miley Cyrus announced the brand’s COVID-19 relief efforts — and officially kicking off the 2020 Viva Glam campaign — on Bright Minded, a series she created to connect people while isolating during the Global Covid Crisis.

To help support the efforts, purchase any current shade of Viva Glam Lipstick or post an Instagram message sharing a “virtual kiss of gratitude to those on the front lines” using the hashtag #mackissofgratitude.
