The Estée Lauder Companies has announced that Nancy Mahon, previously Senior Vice President, Global Corporate Citizenship and Sustainability, has been appointed to serve as the company’s first Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO), effective immediately. The change reflects the ongoing evolution of ELC’s ambitions and capabilities. Nancy will continue to dual report into Fabrizio Freda, President and Chief Executive Officer, and William P. Lauder, Executive Chairman, and serve on the company’s Executive Leadership Team.

As the company’s CSO, Nancy will continue to focus on the strategic integration and implementation of ELC’s sustainability initiatives, as well as ESG reporting across the organization.  She will also continue to serve as Executive Director of The Estée Lauder Companies’ Charitable Foundation. Nancy will also remain a member of ELC’s ESG Management Committee.

“Sustainability has long been central to how The Estée Lauder Companies and its brands have operated, and is a key part of our corporate strategy,” said Freda. “We are committed to continuously evolving to drive our sustainability initiatives forward and helping to innovate and connect at both local and global levels, ultimately positioning us well to succeed in a changing global economy. Appointing Nancy to Chief Sustainability Officer is an example of our company’s ambition and focus on these initiatives.”

“Now more than ever, we have a responsibility to help drive progress, and we are dedicated to our sustainability initiatives throughout the value chain,” said Lauder. “Nancy is a trusted leader with a track record of winning results, and we look forward to her continued success as Chief Sustainability Officer.”

Appointed Senior Vice President, Global Citizenship and Sustainability, in 2014, Nancy has collaborated with leaders across ELC to develop a strategy for ELC’s climate and environmental initiatives, with a focus that includes energy, emissions, packaging, and ingredient traceability.

Under Nancy’s leadership in this capacity, the company has extended its efforts to reduce environmental impacts across operations and throughout the value chain. Notably, ELC has focused on addressing climate change through targets to help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and has implemented strategies to help minimize waste generation and disposal and water use. Moving forward, under Nancy’s leadership, ELC’s sustainability strategy will continue to focus on innovative solutions to gain efficiencies and reduce impact at various stages of our products’ life cycles.

Nancy joined ELC as Vice President, M•A•C Cosmetics and Executive Director of M•A•C AIDS Fund (now known as the M•A•C Viva Glam Fund) in 2006 for philanthropy in this initiative. In recognition of M•A•C’s proven leadership for this cause, Nancy was appointed by President Obama as Chair of the President’s Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS in 2011.

She was promoted to Senior Vice President, M•A•C Cosmetics, in 2009. In 2011, she was named Senior Vice President for Philanthropy and Social Initiatives, assuming responsibility for cause-marketing programs for Bobbi Brown, Jo Malone London, and La Mer, in addition to M•A•C.

Outside of ELC, Nancy has served as Private Delegate to the UN Commission on Women and is a Founding Member of the National Institute of Medicine’s Forum on Global Private Public Partnerships.

One of only two companies worldwide to achieve top ratings in climate, water and forests for five consecutive years

Firmenich, the world’s largest privately-owned fragrance and taste company, has been awarded a fifth consecutive triple “A” by CDP for the Group’s global leadership in transparency and action on climate change, water security and forestry protection.  CDP today placed Firmenich among 12 companies that achieved a triple “A” listing in 2022, out of nearly 15,000 that were scored based on data they submitted to CDP.  The Group is one of only two companies worldwide that have achieved at least five consecutive triple “A” ratings.

CDP’s annual environmental disclosure and scoring process is widely recognized as the gold standard of corporate environmental transparency.  In 2022, over 680 investors with over US$130 trillion in assets and 280 major purchasers with US$6.4 trillion in procurement spend requested companies to disclose data on environmental impacts, risks, and opportunities through CDP’s platform. A record-breaking 18,700 companies responded.

“For the fifth year in a row, CDP has recognized our global leadership in environmental performance with a triple ‘A’ rating,” Gilbert Ghostine, CEO of Firmenich, said. “Firmenich is one of only two companies worldwide and the only one in its industry to have achieved this exceptional sustained performance, which makes me so proud of all 11,000 colleagues who strive every day to deliver on our ambitious Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) targets for climate and nature. Guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we are successfully placing our ESG strategy at the heart of our growth, providing sustainable solutions for our customers and achieving excellence with both our measurable ESG performance and our record financial results in 2022. Sustainability and good business are synonymous: our journey demonstrates that businesses can drive urgently needed change for the planet and we are determined to keep on raising the bar.”

Neil McFarlane, Senior VP Global Quality, Health, Safety & Environment, Firmenich, said: “At Firmenich, we strive to be proactive in our approach to the climate crisis. We place great emphasis on the science supporting this critical issue which helps us frame our strategy towards decarbonization. Our colleagues are highly motivated by environmental action, and we are confident that we are taking the necessary measures to manage and minimize our impact, with the aim of leading our industry on the path to net zero and therefore ensuring the best possible future for the generations that follow.”

Maxfield Weiss, Executive Director, CDP Europe, said: “COP27 showed the need for transformational change is more critical than ever if we are to limit warming to 1.5 °C, and to see consistently high ratings in businesses is cause for optimism. Only 12 companies globally have achieved triple A scores for climate change, forests, and water security leadership and I’m delighted that Firmenich is one of two companies that sustained this pace for at least five years in a row. With the EU’s ground-breaking new reporting regulation, the CSRD, now agreed, CDP A List companies are showing they are ahead of the game – taking clear action to reduce emissions and to address environmental impacts throughout their value chains. This is the type of environmental transparency and action we need economy-wide to prevent ecological collapse.”

Firmenich aims to achieve absolute carbon emissions reduction by 2030 in line with limiting temperature rise to 1.5˚C, as well as net-zero emissions by 2039 across its direct operations and value chain. The Group’s net-zero targets were validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in August 2022, making Firmenich the first company in its industry to receive SBTi approval.

Sustainability has been at the core of Firmenich’s values for several decades. In its audited ESG Report 2022, the company reported that Scope 1 and 2 emissions were reduced by 36.1% vs. 2017, while three manufacturing sites, in Norway, Singapore and South Africa, became carbon neutral in FY22, all operating without the use of offsets. Firmenich also maintained 100% renewable electricity in its operations worldwide. Firmenich strives to reduce critical water risks across its operations through annual assessments and aims to reduce its total water use globally, with a vision to reach water neutrality by 2030. Overall, Firmenich retains a Sustainalytics score of 7.5, ranking 51st of approximately 15,500 companies worldwide, highlighting its low ESG risk profile.

More details of Firmenich’s performance and targets on climate and nature are available in its ESG Report 2022.

LUXE PACK Monaco unveils the LUXE PACK in Green 2022 Finalists and Winners

Pioneering in showcasing sustainable packaging, LUXE PACK understood a long time ago that sustainability and environmental conservation are among consumers’ biggest concerns.

For 13 years, the LUXE PACK in Green Awards have highlighted and rewarded the best sustainable packaging innovations and responsible initiatives presented during the show.

In 2022, they pursued efforts to make sustainable development an integral part of the show with the aim to become “the” global barometer of eco-responsible packaging trends for luxury brands.

This year, the jury welcomed the profusion of entries received from the show’s exhibitors; the selection exercise according to the LUXE PACK in Green Charter and its precise criteria was not easy.

LUXE PACK MONACO unveils the finalists of the LUXE PACK in Green Awards and then announced two winners on Tuesday, October 4th, during the conference.

This year, the LUXE PACK IN GREEN ceremony was moderated by Alice Vachet, host of the podcast L’empreinte, who announced that out of the following well qualified candidates – all of whom offered interesting solutions to consider…

Low environmental impact for customers/applicators:

– Specialized since its origin in the field of UV curing polymers chemistry, with undeniable technical and aesthetic performances, ALTUS Coating anticipated the necessary energy savings in doing so: radiation replacing convection, thus strongly reducing consumption.

– ALTUS Coating has created its own environmental charter in 2019 to highlight the development of more sustainable solutions. This charter is based on 3 criteria:

*Products with a maximum of 10% volatile organic compounds

*Products with at least 10% of bio-based substances (ALTUS Coating prefers to use bio-sourced components from secondary materials in the food industry, avoiding the use of primary materials as much as possible)

*Products that can be dried under LED lamps

– In 2021, more than 40% of the projects have followed at least one criterion of the charter.

KURZ In March 2022, LEONHARD KURZ celebrated the official commissioning of its new photovoltaic system in Sulzbach-Rosenberg. On an area of around 8.5 hectares, this means that after two years of planning and construction, one of the largest solar power plants in the region has been built.

It will enable KURZ to cover around a quarter of its electricity requirements on site. And with the photovoltaic system, KURZ can save around 6,000 tons of CO2 per year.

But even further to the system in Sulzbach-Rosenberg KURZ installed their first solar system at the plant in Malaysia in parallel and are also in the process of commissioning a large cogeneration plant.

Givaudan, a global industry leader in the world of scent and beauty, and LanzaTech NZ, Inc., an innovative Carbon Capture and Transformation (“CCT”) company have announced a collaboration for the development of sustainable fragrance ingredients from renewable carbon.

Renewable carbon is carbon that avoids or substitutes the use of additional fossil carbon. Examples include carbon from CO2 and carbon recycling. Multiple commercial facilities are already licensing LanzaTech’s technology, converting various waste carbon sources to ethanol, including the conversion of industrial emissions in China, thanks to the power of industrial biology and a proprietary biocatalyst. With over 15 years scale-up experience, LanzaTech’s approach to carbon transformation is bringing renewable carbon into people’s lives through the conversion of emissions to ethanol and the subsequent conversion of ethanol to the building blocks necessary to make a wide range of consumer goods, such as laundry detergent, clothing, shoes, and food packaging. In addition, thanks to its synthetic biology and modeling capabilities, LanzaTech can introduce new pathways into their biocatalyst to produce a variety of different chemicals through this process.

The research collaboration with Givaudan is one that is expected to leverage this synthetic biology capability and go beyond the production of ethanol, with the companies working together to establish novel pathways to key fragrance ingredients used across the Givaudan portfolio. By searching for new opportunities to bring perfumery material innovations to life, the companies have a shared goal of using sustainable methods to continue serving consumers through enhancing the perfumery palette and being good for the planet as well.

Jeremy Compton, Global Head of Science and Technology for Fragrances at Givaudan said: “We are very excited about this strategic collaboration with LanzaTech, a much-respected sustainable materials company that has an impressive heritage, and a state-of-the-art research platform in renewable carbon solutions. Our purpose of ‘creating for healthier, happier lives with love for nature’ fully aligns with the aspiration of our two companies to develop products that support us in being carbon neutral in the future. Together we have the potential to grow with our respective businesses while increasing our positive impact on the world with products consumers feel good about, and that preserve our planet.”

“Givaudan has long been an expert in pairing innovation and technology in the world of fragrance and we are excited to be working with a company that shares our vision of a post pollution future,” said Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech. “Together, thanks to the power of synthetic biology, we are expanding the way in which we can deliver sustainable solutions to all consumers, giving them a choice as to where their carbon comes from while protecting our planet.”

Both companies have been longstanding members of the Renewable Carbon Initiative, an organization whose goal is to support and speed up the transition from fossil carbon to renewable carbon for all organic chemicals and materials.

“Industry has to go beyond using renewable energy,” said Michael Carus, founder of the RCI.” All fossil carbon use must end, as the carbon contained in the molecules of chemicals and plastics is destined to end up in the atmosphere sooner or later. Only a full phase-out of fossil carbon will help to prevent a further increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations.”

Symrise Cosmetic Ingredients wins four prizes at the BSB Innovation Awards 2022
  • Recognizes sustainable and innovative cosmetic ingredients
  • Emphasizes position as one of the innovation leaders in the industry

Symrise Cosmetic Ingredients won four prizes in various categories at the renowned European BSB Innovation Awards 2022. Recently launched, the cosmetic ingredient SymHair® Thermo received first prize for the Most Innovative Natural Product in Hair Care. In the category “Applied Concepts”, the new sustainability digital app Track4Trust™ won first prize for its innovative design to track and trace ingredients in the sourcing process. The 100% bio-based cosmetic functional, Hydrolite® 7 green, won second prize in the Functionals category. Lastly, SymFerment® won third prize in Actives in the “Plumping, moisturization and barrier” category. These awards demonstrate the leading position of Symrise in the development of sustainable cosmetic ingredients.

“We feel thrilled to have won four prizes at this year’s BSB Innovation Awards further highlighting our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” explains Jörn Andreas, President of Cosmetic Ingredients at Symrise. “This demonstrates great recognition for our global teams from R&D to product development across our business in hair care, micro-protection, skin actives, and sustainability. This award inspires us to continue developing high-quality, powerful and innovative products for our customers.”

This year’s BSB awards have awarded Symrise for their novel ingredient sourcing app and three ingredients with a sustainability focus. This underlines how Symrise innovates in areas that consumers find important when choosing cosmetic products for their beauty routines and special occasions.

Track4Trust™: a powerful digital tool for transparency and traceability

Symrise continues to go above and beyond in sustainability by launching a digital app allowing consumers to track and trace ingredients in the sourcing process. To promote more ingredient transparency in line with customer demands, the digital app allows customers to easily find product characteristics and sustainability properties by scanning a QR code.

SymHair® Thermo: a natural complex for thermal protection of hair

With the ingredient SymHair® Thermo, Symrise experts have developed a 100% natural complex for thermal protection. The active ingredient is derived from a Traditional Chinese Medicine mushroom and saccharides that protect the hair fiber against damages caused by heat tools. It provides thermal protection for hair, and enables a long-lasting styling effect, also in high humidity conditions.

Hydrolite® 7 green: a 100% bio-based next generation cosmetic multifunctional

The unique seven-carbon alkanediol comes from 100% bio-based sources, derived from sustainably sourced castor bean oil. The one-of-a-kind multifunctional ingredient comes, a clear, colorless neat substance, can go into a variety of traditional or natural/green cosmetic formulations and works well with all skin types.

SymFerment®: a new generation of moisturizers based on probiotic technology

Combining both efficacy and sustainability, SymFerment® delivers on the overarching goal of developing innovative cosmetic ingredients for skin care. To create the cosmetic active Symrise uses an upcycling process to obtain the valuable side streams. It then turns them into an effective ingredient that provides moisturizing and smoothing benefits for the skin, including strengthening the skin barrier.

The independent consulting agency BSB has presented the renowned European BSB Innovation Awards since 2003. It celebrates the expertise and innovation in the world of cosmetics. Many ingredients from the Symrise Cosmetic Ingredient product portfolio have received awards in recent years.

The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to conserve the land and waters on which all life depends and Herbal Essence aims to help.

So between March 27 and April 23, 2022, Herbal Essences will contribute $1.13 (the equivalent of 1 tree) to The Nature Conservancy for every 2 bottles of single bio:renew Hemp & Potent Aloe, Mango & Potent Aloe and Honey & Vitamin B shampoo or conditioner (excludes dual-packs) purchased at Meijer and on Meijer.com  (with a minimum of 3,200 trees and a maximum of 7,500 trees).

In an effort to support The Nature Conservancy’s Plant a Billion Trees Program, Herbal Essences’ partnership with the non-profit organization this year will help plant more than 35,000 trees in the United States.

Guided by science, The Nature Conservancy creates innovative, on-the-ground solutions to our world’s toughest challenges so that nature and people can thrive together. We are tackling climate change, conserving lands, waters and oceans at an unprecedented scale, providing food and water sustainably and helping make cities more sustainable. Working in 72 countries and territories, we use a collaborative approach that engages local communities, governments, the private sector, and other partners.

Forests around the world are under threat due to development, invasive species and impacts of climate change. Established in 2008, The Nature Conservancy is planting trees and restoring forests around the globe in seven priority countries, including Brazil, China, Colombia, Kenya, Mexico, Tanzania, and the United States. It is ambitious, but our forests around the world are worth the effort. They are essential to healthy lives and a healthy planet. Our approach takes advantage of the best available science to ensure that the forests we restore and establish are viable ecosystems that provide multiple benefits and high-quality habitat. Our tree planting program consistently monitors the health, growth rate and impacts at each site ensuring best-in-class survival rates at an average of 85-95% per site. In addition to planting trees, the Plant a Billion program supports the removal of invasive species, protecting areas where tree saplings are growing, encouraging species to return to degraded areas, and removing any barriers that might prevent a forest from regrowth.

In 2021, Symrise began a three-year research and development collaboration with French company Antofénol based in Plestan, Brittany. The company’s focus are natural solutions for replacing conventional agroextracts obtained by innovative, sustainable eco-extraction using microwave, ultrasound and vacuum technologies. The partners want to work together to develop environmentally friendly products. They will focus primarily on cosmetic ingredients and scents as well as the extraction of valuable compounds from side streams of the Flavor & Nutrition division.

The partners will contribute their specific skill sets and experiences to the collaboration in order to develop jointly unique products. Antofénol’s particular strengths lie in the microwave, ultrasound and vacuum extraction techniques, feasible even in combined mode, of natural raw materials. The technologies provide a number of advantages: They can adapt well to various raw materials, they use fast and effective energy transfer, and they save time compared with conventional processes. Antofénol’s high competency in the selection, sourcing and valuation of natural raw materials is also adding to this. In return, Symrise contributes its expertise in research and product development to the partnership, as well as its knowledge of the market, customers, and consumer demands. Of the Holzminden group, the cosmetic ingredients and scent divisions – both anchored in the Scent & Care segment – and France based Diana Nova from the Flavor & Nutrition segment participate in the collaboration.

“We feel delighted that we could form a partnership with Antofénol – a technology leader in innovative eco-extractions,” says Dr. Marielle Le Maire, Senior Vice President, Global Head of BU Actives & Botanicals from Cosmetic Ingredients Division at Symrise. “We expect this to provide us with new sustainable and innovative cosmetic ingredients and plant-based unique developments for our Scent & Care segment. We also expect that our food component production will benefit from greener and faster extraction technologies.”

Strong demand for sustainable products

The collaboration started to target the continuous increase in customer and consumer demands for naturalness, environmentally friendly and resources preserving manufacturing conditions. Sustainable and natural products from up-cycling of renewable side streams with good traceability play a decisive role in Symrise’s commercial success. The partnership strengthens the Holzminden Group’s position with regard to natural products in the Scent & Care segment and opens up new application areas in the Flavor & Nutrition segment.

“Environmentally friendly manufactured products form an important pillar of our sustainability strategy,” says Dr. Martina Herrmann, Director Phytochemistry Global Innovation Cosmetic Ingredients. “Our collaboration allows us to apply Antofénol’s highly specialized eco-extraction technologies in the lab as well as on an industrial scale, so we can expand our internal capacities and take advantage of new opportunities for product development.”

“In the frame of our custom manufacturing activity, we have started to work with Symrise 2 years ago on several projects. As the result of the trust-based relationship created between our teams, this 3 years R&D collaboration with a famous global leader is the recognition of the added value of our extraction technology for natural ingredients,” says Fanny Rolet, Founder and CEO of Antofénol. “Together with Fabrice de Panthou, Business Director, we are particularly proud to collaborate with a company driven, like us, by science and innovation.”

Firmenich, the world’s largest privately-owned perfume and taste company, presents its ESG 2030 ambition to be #1 in Conscious Perfumery with bold targets on fragrance biodegradability, renewability, carbon footprint, responsible sourcing, and transparency on environmental impact. Building on the Group’s industry-leading sustainability performance, this holistic set of targets supports and accelerates customers’ transformation for their brands, whilst driving opportunities for positive change.

Ilaria Resta, President, Global Perfumery, Firmenich

“With our vision of Positive Perfumery, we want to lead our industry transformation. Our aim is to reduce our carbon and environmental footprint, and ultimately have a positive impact on people, nature and climate with our fragrances,” says Ilaria Resta, President, Global Perfumery, Firmenich. “Conscious Perfumery aims to combine the best of nature and science to create Conscious Fragrances, and their relevant claims, with our best-in-class sustainable palette of renewable, biodegradable and responsibly sourced ingredients, working with our partners in the full chain of fragrance development to drive best quality and high standards of socio-economic impact on communities.”

Firmenich’s leadership in sustainability is supported by its third-party ratings, with the highest ‘Platinum’ EcoVadis rating in the industry for social and environmental performance and a score of 88/100, as well as a Sustainalytics ranking as 37th out of approximately 15,000 companies rated worldwide. The Group is also one of only two companies in the world to have received a CDP triple “A” rating in climate, water and forests for four consecutive years. Firmenich is now driving its performance to the next level with ambitious targets for Perfumery.

Firmenich’s 2030 Conscious Perfumery ambitions are that:

  • The fragrance portfolio will comprise 99% of ultimately or partially biodegradable ingredients, as defined by the OECD.
  • The carbon impact of the perfumery business will be reduced by 25%1.
  • 100 % of fragrances will be renewable as defined by ISO 16128.
  • Responsible Sourcing is reinforced with 90% of suppliers’ spend rated EcoVadis Silver or better.
  • 100% of the fragrance portfolio will be assessed for environmental and social impact in order to provide

fact-based transparency and drive constant improvement in formulations.

“We see a growing consumer demand to know ingredients are biodegradable, renewable, and that the sourcing of natural ingredients respects the environment, and supports communities,” states Michal Benmayor, Vice President, Conscious Perfumery Business Development, Firmenich. “With our Conscious Perfumery ambitions, we aim to drive innovation and creativity to advance the development of delightful and performing fragrances that are also more conscious and eco-friendly.”

Scientific Community Embraces Quantitative Approach to Incorporate Green Chemistry Principles into Product Formulation

As part of its ongoing commitment to advancing sustainability and innovation across its operations and the personal care products industry, The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) has released its Green Score methodology to assess and measure the sustainability of ingredients and formulas based on green chemistry principles.

Years of dedicated development and evaluation have culminated in the publication of the peer-reviewed manuscript, “Applying Green Chemistry to Raw Material Selection and Product Formulation at The Estée Lauder Companies,” newly published in Green Chemistry, the Royal Society of Chemistry’s journal. The authors transparently share the Green Score’s methodology, data sources and unique framework to quantitively evaluate ingredients and formulas across its in-house portfolio of prestige beauty products through the lenses of human health, ecosystem health and the environment. By publicly sharing ELC’s approach, the company aims to encourage sustainable innovation across the consumer products industry.

“At The Estée Lauder Companies, we are committed to creating breakthrough, high-performing products that embed sustainability throughout their lifecycle. Our unique Green Score measurement and assessment tool enables us to integrate green chemistry into our product development process and further enhance the sustainability of our products,” said George Daher, Senior Vice President, Product Safety, Regulatory Affairs and Green Chemistry, The Estée Lauder Companies. “We hope that by publishing this methodology, our approach can be adopted, built upon and scaled by others across our industry to further advance sustainability and transparency.”

ELC will continue to use the Green Score to inform its decision-making, communicate expectations with suppliers, and prioritize raw materials, product types as well as product forms. The methodology is currently being leveraged by its formulation laboratories around the world to guide innovation for greener alternatives and to assess new product launches while maintaining performance standards. Green Scores have already been calculated for all individual materials and formulations across ELC’s in-house skincare, hair care and makeup portfolios. Additionally, all formulators throughout the organization have been trained to use the quantitative tool to assess the sustainability of their formulations in real time, so they can make educated choices about which ingredients to include.

The Green Score has also benefited from validation by ELC’s Green Chemistry Scientific Advisory Board, comprised of academic experts in green chemistry from its key global regions – China, Europe, North America and Latin America.

Dr. Paul Anastas, Professor in the Practice of Chemistry for the Environment at Yale University, who serves on the scientific advisory board and co-authored the manuscript, explains, “This tool has taken a concept that is quite complex and distilled it into a useful metric that not only assesses products that already exist but also informs how new, higher-performing products can be designed in the future.”

ELC’s Green Score is part of the company’s green chemistry program and broader commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG). The company has built a solid foundation to advance its objective of embedding green chemistry principles throughout the product-development process across its internal R&D and Supply Chain operations to continuously improve the environmental and human health profiles of its formulations while improving performance and delivering on consumer expectations. The Green Score complements existing social impact and sustainability initiatives by employing a scientifically robust and quantifiable metric for measuring sustainability of formulation, which is a material element of its value creation.

The ELC Green Score will be used to create metrics and track progress against formulation commitments to be outlined in the company’s Fiscal 2022 Social Impact & Sustainability Report. To learn more about ELC’s commitment to sustainability, access the Fiscal 2021 Social Impact & Sustainability Report.

“This is a really promising paper that shows how chemistry is helping established companies make real change in improving their green credentials,” said Dr. Andrew Shore, Executive Editor of Green Chemistry at the Royal Society of Chemistry. “The Estée Lauder Companies has produced a plan that shows how seriously they are taking their responsibility to protect the environment and their research was warmly received by the reviewers and members of the journal editorial board.”

As The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) continues to drive progress toward its sustainability and social impact goals, the S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI), the world’s leading index provider, has included the company in its prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for North America in 2021. The inclusion of ELC in the index recognizes the company’s strong ESG performance over the past year, and continued commitment to the highest standard of transparency and disclosure.

“At ELC, we have long understood that solving the challenges facing global communities and creating long-term business value are not mutually exclusive,” said Fabrizio Freda, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Estée Lauder Companies. “Our recognition by this year’s DJSI reflects both our commitment to decisive action on climate change and other global environmental challenges, as well as our continued efforts to support solutions to social challenges and inequities affecting the communities where we live, work, and source. We are thankful to the teams who have helped us to deliver on these commitments over the past year.”

Focused on assessing the largest companies globally, the DJSI are float-adjusted market capitalization weighted indices that measure the performance of businesses selected with environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria. ELC’s inclusion on the North America index is a testament to the social impact and sustainability achievements set out in the company’s fiscal 21 Social Impact and Sustainability Report, Beauty Inspired, Values Driven.“We congratulate The Estée Lauder Companies for being included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for North America,” said Manjit Jus, Global Head of ESG Research, S&P Global. “A DJSI distinction is a reflection of being a sustainability leader in your industry. The record number of companies participating in the 2021 S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment is testament to the growing movement for ESG disclosure and transparency.”ELC is proud of the progress it has made to date, but there is still more work to be done. The results of this year’s index will help the company identify the solutions that are moving its ESG strategy forward, and identify new areas of opportunity to deliver positive impact to people and the planet.
