The Estée Lauder Companies has announced the passing of Chairman Emeritus Leonard A. Lauder on June 14, at the age of 92, surrounded by family.

Mr. Lauder was born in 1933 in New York City, the oldest son of Estée and Joseph H. Lauder, the founders of The Estée Lauder Companies. He was a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and the Officer Candidate School of the United States Navy. Mr. Lauder studied at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and as a Navy reservist, for which the U.S. Navy Supply Corps Foundation later recognized him with its Distinguished Alumni Award. He formally joined Estée Lauder in 1958, and for more than six decades, Mr. Lauder was a visionary and an innovator, helping transform the business from a handful of products sold under a single brand in U.S. stores to the multi-brand, global leader in prestige beauty that it is today.

“Throughout his life, my father worked tirelessly to build and transform the beauty industry, pioneering many of the innovations, trends, and best practices that are foundational to the industry today,” said William P. Lauder, son and Chair, Board of Directors, The Estée Lauder Companies. “He was the most charitable man I have ever known, believing that art and education belonged to everyone, and championing the fight against diseases such as Alzheimer’s and breast cancer. Above all, my father was a man who practiced kindness with everyone he met. His impact was enormous. He believed that employees were the heart and soul of our company, and they adored him and moments spent with him. His warmth and thoughtfulness made an imprint on our company, the industry, and, of course, our family. Together with my family, The Estée Lauder Companies, and the countless people he touched, we celebrate his extraordinary life.”

Mr. Lauder served as President of The Estée Lauder Companies from 1972 to 1995 and as Chief Executive Officer from 1982 through 1999. He was named Chairman in 1995 and served in that role through June 2009. Throughout his tenure at the company, Mr. Lauder consistently challenged the status quo, developing and implementing innovative sales and marketing programs that revolutionized the beauty industry. He created the company’s first research and development laboratory, brought in professional management at every level, and was the driving force behind The Estée Lauder Companies’ international expansion, helping to increase the company’s sales and profits exponentially.

A legendary brand builder, Mr. Lauder led the launch of many brands including Aramis, Clinique, and Lab Series, among others. Until his death, he remained deeply involved in the company’s acquisition strategy, including the acquisitions of Aveda, Bobbi Brown, Jo Malone London, La Mer, and M∙A∙C.

Speaking for The Estée Lauder Companies, President and Chief Executive Officer Stéphane de La Faverie said, “Leonard Lauder was beloved by many and will be missed tremendously. To our employees at The Estée Lauder Companies, he was an inspiration and a champion. To the industry, he was an icon and pioneer, earning respect worldwide. His energy and vision helped shape our company and will continue to do so for generations to come. He was a deeply compassionate leader who cared profoundly about every person in the company. I feel privileged to have worked with Leonard, who has been the best mentor I could have dreamt to learn from. He will be remembered by all of us.”

During his many years as Chairman Emeritus, Mr. Lauder was closely involved in the business and day-to-day operations of the company and was a constant fixture at The Estée Lauder Companies’ global headquarters in New York and at our stores and counters across the globe until the time of his death. Mr. Lauder believed that each of his colleagues was like a member of his family and treated them as such. The values that continue to set the company apart are the values he so strongly believed in and embodied, most notably generosity of spirit and kindness toward all. Perhaps the role Mr. Lauder was most proud of was the unofficial one as The Estée Lauder Companies’ “chief teaching officer.” He believed that a company’s wealth is its people and focused on mentoring and fostering growth within the company’s diverse talent pool. He believed strongly in the importance of recognition and gratitude and was a tireless advocate for employees. At the onset of the global pandemic in 2020, Mr. Lauder was instrumental in setting up the ELC Cares Employee Relief Fund to support the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of employees and their families.

Mr. Lauder was deeply involved in medical research, education, art, foreign policy, and philanthropy, and the marks he made on those worlds were transformational.

Mr. Lauder believed passionately in the importance of public access to art and museums, which inspired his philosophy that the primary role of a collector was to conserve, not possess. He was a long-time supporter of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met) and, in 2013, pledged his 78-piece collection of Cubist art to the museum in the largest single philanthropic gift in the Met’s history. He later added five major works to that promised gift. In concert with his Cubist collection donation, he helped establish the Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art at the Met to support a robust program of fellowships, focused exhibitions, and public lectures. Along with his prominent presence at the Met, he also served as the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Chairman Emeritus and a trustee from 1977 to 2011. Throughout his life, he donated works of art and endowed curatorial positions and research departments to numerous institutions.

Mr. Lauder was a long-time advocate of cancer research and served as Honorary Chairman of the board of directors at the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the organization his beloved late-wife, Evelyn H. Lauder, founded in 1993. He also championed the fight against Alzheimer’s by co-founding and leading the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation with his brother, Ronald S. Lauder, which supports cutting-edge drug research. Mr. Lauder remained actively engaged with these organizations until his death, and they were extraordinarily dear to his heart.

Remembering his brother, Ronald S. Lauder, Chairman, Clinique Laboratories, LLC at The Estée Lauder Companies, said, “Leonard was a wonderful brother and a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, colleague, and friend. But his legacy extends far beyond being the heart of our family. His impact will be felt for generations to come thanks to his tireless philanthropy, advocacy, and creativity in tackling some of the world’s greatest challenges. The number of lives he touched and positively impacted across all his endeavors is immeasurable. His passion and generosity have inspired us all, and there are no words to express how much he will be missed.”

“My father was a remarkable man, a leader in business, a devoted philanthropist, and a deeply loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather,” said Gary M. Lauder, son and Member, Board of Directors, The Estée Lauder Companies. “His energy, sharp intellect, and generous spirit touched the lives of so many across the world. To me, he was also a constant source of encouragement, wisdom, and love. His legacy is vast, not only in the beauty industry, but in the countless lives improved by his charitable efforts and his passionate commitment to the arts, education, and healthcare. He was not only well-respected and admired, but he was also adored by his employees and colleagues. This affection stands out for me. While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his extraordinary life, his lasting contributions, and the values he instilled in all of us: integrity, curiosity, and the importance of giving back. He will be missed more than words can express.”

Mr. Lauder believed in the value of education and supported a variety of academic institutions. He was an emeritus trustee of the University of Pennsylvania and a founding member of the board of governors of its Joseph H. Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies, along with his brother, Ronald. His passion for education continued into the public space, having supported several schools in the New Yorkarea and receiving the honor of being an inductee into the Bronx High School of Science Hall of Fame in 2017. When the pandemic in 2020 magnified the nation’s acute shortage of quality primary care in underserved communities, Mr. Lauder worked with the University of Pennsylvania to create a tuition-free program to educate nurse practitioners. His donation of $125 million, the largest gift ever to an American nursing school, made possible the Leonard A. Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Program at the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Lauder worked throughout his life to promote dialogue among governments, political and non-governmental organizations, and the public and private sectors, believing that this interdisciplinary dialogue is crucial to progress. He served as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and as Chairman Emeritus and a lifetime trustee on the board of directors at the Aspen Institute. He felt that public service was a person’s duty and, in addition to his time in the U.S. Navy, later served on the Advisory Committee for Trade Negotiations under President Ronald Reagan from 1983–1987.

Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Lauder was honored with a myriad of awards, including the “Lone Sailor” Award given by the U.S. Navy Supply Corps Foundation, the Légion d’Honneur given by the government of France, the Women’s Leadership Award given by the Lincoln Center Corporate Fund Women’s Leadership Council, and the Palazzo Strozzi Renaissance Man of the Year Award. In 2020, he was inducted into the Retail Hall of Fame by the World Retail Congress.

The Lauder family received the esteemed 2011 Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in recognition of its long-standing commitment to philanthropy and public service. In 2014, Mr. Lauder was named a Living Landmark by the New York Landmarks Conservancy. Mr. Lauder and Ms. Glickman Lauder also received the Gordon Parks Foundation Patron of the Arts Award in 2016.

Mr. Lauder shared many of the lessons he learned in business and life in his memoir, The Company I Keep: My Life in Beauty, published to great acclaim in 2020.

He was married to Evelyn H. Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice President at The Estée Lauder Companies and the Founder of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, from 1959 until she passed away in 2011. On January 1, 2015, Mr. Lauder married Judy Glickman Lauder, a philanthropist and internationally recognized photographer whose work is represented in more than 300 public and private collections, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Whitney Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the United States Holocaust Museum. Mr. Lauder considered himself lucky in love and believed that lightning really could strike twice.

From the beginning, he was devoted to family. He loved his parents and adored his brother, Ronald, and the family Ronald built with Jo Carole. His nieces and their families held a special place in his heart. Mr. Lauder was grateful to his wife, Judy, for widening his family circle and cherished his stepchildren and their families. But mostly, he was extraordinarily proud of both of his sons, their families, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved them so dearly.

Mr. Lauder was a true visionary, fearless leader, and cherished friend to so many. He was the beacon of our company and the north star of an entire industry. The world is a better place because Leonard Lauder was in it. The Estée Lauder Companies extends our deepest sympathies to the entire Lauder family during this exceedingly difficult time.

Mr. Lauder is survived by his wife, Judy Glickman Lauder; his son William P. Lauder; his son Gary M. Lauder and wife, Laura Lauder; five grandchildren, Rachel, Danielle, Djuna-Bear, Joshua, Eliana, two great-grandchildren, many stepchildren and step grandchildren, as well as his brother, Ronald S. Lauder, and wife, Jo Carole Lauder, and their daughters, Aerin Lauder and Jane Lauder.

A private service will be held for friends and family. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation.

Robertet marked its 175th anniversary with the grand opening of its expanded New York City Creative Center. The evening, dedicated to French savoir-faire, welcomed guests to explore the new space, which featured a photo exhibition by Stéphane Martinelli, a curated fragrance experience showcasing the exclusive ICONS 175 series, and a live music performance by French singer Dolly Lowe.
Robertet’s North America President  Arnaud Adrian and Global CEO Jerome Bruhat welcomed guests and shared the inspiration behind their new Creative Space, designed to foster innovation and collaboration in the heart of New York City.
“Our new Creative Center in New York City is more than just a space; it’s a magnet for great brand founders and creative teams. We’ve designed this environment to foster collaboration, spark innovation, and provide access to Robertet’s unparalleled savoir faire with natural ingredients.” – stated Adrian.
Photographer Stéphane Martinelli’s commissioned work captures the intersection of nature, artistry, and scent, blending contemporary style with Robertet’s expertise in transforming raw materials into exquisite fragrances.ICONS 175 – The Fragrance Experience
Guests were immersed in five distinct scent experiences, each highlighting iconic natural perfumery ingredients that Robertet has been sourcing for much of its 175-year history. The result was the ICONS 175 series of custom scents, created exclusively for this anniversary celebration.

Rose 175: The entrance featured a scent created by perfumer Elena Valdivieso-Ruiz, inspired by the Centifolia Rose. Guests were greeted by walls of roses and vines, immersing them in the aroma of this iconic ingredient, blended with zesty Bergamot and juicy Passionfruit.

Mimosa 175: In the Library, guests discovered the scent of Mimosa, accompanied by an abundance of these vibrant yellow flowers. This fragrance, also created by Elena, celebrated the Provence-sourced mimosa, capturing its shimmering and powdery quality.

Interactive Booths: One of the most captivating experiences awaited guests at each immersive fragrance booths, each a sensory journey crafted by Perfumer Jérôme Epinette.

The scents included:

Coffee 175: A surprising tribute to Robertet’s legacy as the original inventor and patent-holder of ‘café instantané’ dating back to the mid-19th century. This deep, resonant fragrance featured intoxicating notes of Coffee, Cocoa, and Hinoki Wood.

Iris 175: Showcasing one of perfumery’s most prized ingredients, this fragrance highlighted Robertet’s expertise in distilling Iris for over 100 years. The velvety Iris was juxtaposed with Frankincense, earthy Patchouli, and a hint of Rose petals, creating a captivating contrast.
Tonka 175: A testament to Robertet’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, this scent artfully blends roasted Tonka with creamy Pistachio and warm Vanilla. Sourced from South America and produced through Robertet’s CleanRScent™ program, it offered a rich, inviting experience.

Members of the American Society of Perfumers ventured to Hackensack, New Jersey, to celebrate Fragrance Day and explore The Facticerie – the world’s largest collection of fragrance factices, on the second anniversary of it’s induction into the Guiness Book of World Records.

Guests were welcomed by Facticerie Founder and Factice Collector Sudhir Gupta and his partner Mercedes Acosta who greeted more than 50 members of the prestigious organization. Founded in 1947, the ASP boasts more than 300 professional perfumers in all and upholds the highest level of professional perfumery in the country. Perfumers from L’Oreal, Symrise, Robertet, Mane, Takasago, Givaudan, Agilex and other top fragrance houses were in attendance, including Symrise Master Perfumer Dirk Braun, Robertet’s James Krivda. Mane’s Vincent Kuczinski, and Delbia Do’s Darryl Do. The group was given a personal tour of The Facticerie by the collector, himself, along with special guest Dahiana Pérez, local television host of New York Live TV on NBC.

The Facticerie is home to more than 3.000 rare perfume factices, some one-of-a-kind. Each factice is a timeless expression of a lost art as unique as the fragrance it represents. As the retail industry evolves, factious are increasing rare and at risk of being lost and forgotten. Inspired by Gupta’s passion, The Facticerie serves to preserve these treasures.

The Estée Lauder Companies has announced that Rashida La Lande has been appointed Executive Vice President and General Counsel, effective August 19, 2024. Ms. La Lande will jointly report to William P. Lauder, Executive Chairman, and Fabrizio Freda, President and Chief Executive Officer. She will join the Company’s Executive Leadership Team.

As Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Ms. La Lande will be responsible for ELC’s global Legal organization. She will act as a strategic advisor to the organization and to ELC’s Board of Directors on complex global legal issues and the Company’s business. In this critical role, she will lead the Company’s legal strategy, practices, and policies globally. She will also oversee the Company’s Global Privacy Office and Global Security Team. Ms. La Lande will act as a key partner to the Company’s leadership and business units across the organization on a wide range of legal matters including corporate strategies, reporting, compliance, risk mitigation, governance and business transactions. She will also lead the Company’s legal review of potential acquisitions, divestitures, and joint ventures.

Ms. La Lande brings with her more than 25 years of experience advising corporations and representing companies and private equity sponsors in the consumer products, retail, financial services, and technology industries.

“Rashida’s impressive experience acting as a key strategic partner to executive leadership teams and boards coupled with her sound judgment advising a publicly traded, values-driven business on legal matters makes her ideally suited for this role,” said William P. Lauder.

Ms. La Lande joins The Estee Lauder Companies from The Kraft Heinz Company, where she held roles of increasing responsibility since January 2018, culminating as the Executive Vice President and Global Chief Legal and Corporate Affairs Officer in December 2023. During her tenure with Kraft Heinz, Ms. La Lande was responsible for leading the legal function, including corporate governance and securities, transactions, regulatory, intellectual property, litigation, and labor and employment, as well as the company’s Environmental Social and Governance activities and Global Government Affairs function.

“Rashida’s extensive experience managing legal matters across a diverse portfolio of iconic and new brands for one of the largest food and beverage companies in the world makes her uniquely qualified for this role,” said Fabrizio Freda. “Working closely with our Board of Directors, William, and me, Rashida will be a critical partner in driving ELC’s strategy for long-term sustainable, profitable growth, and bringing our brands and company to the next level.”

Prior to joining The Kraft Heinz Company, Ms. La Lande was a partner at the Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher law firm, where she practiced as a partner from 2007 to 2018 and as an associate from 2000 to 2007. She began her legal career as an associate at Chadbourne & Parke LLP from 1998 to 2000.

Ms. La Lande holds a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies from Harvard University and a Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School in New York City.

Call it Abstract Expressionism: classic white musk meets a dynamic new spin.

THE INSPIRATION

When Bond No. 9 opened its flagship in 2003, the pioneering Founder Laurice Rahmé admired the potential of this small, eclectic downtown street and neighborhood. Many residents in the area had been working artists who had moved there during the thriving 1970s art era (including Bruce Williams and Robert Mapplethorpe), and while Bond Street was not quite yet the elegant, refined destination it now is, the bourgeoning fragrance boutique shared a very cool neighbor: the iconic Blick Art Materials store was located a stone’s throw down the street at #1 Bond Street.

In the undisputed art capital of the world,” professional artists and students alike made the pilgrimage to Blick on Bond until 2022 when it finally closed shop and moved further downtown near Canal Street. Still, the original artistic heritage of Bond Street is forever infused in its cobblestone streets. Originally constructed as The Robbins and Appleton Building, #1 Bond Street was built in 1879-1880, designated a landmark in 1979, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Designed by architect Stephen Decatur Hatch, the ornate cast iron façade is a striking example of Second Empire style and emblematic of the creative architectural variety that embodies both the historic and futuristic on Bond Street.

Inspired by this blend of old and new, Bond Number One takes the enduringly popular white musk note—regarded as one of the most sensual and grounding scents—and artfully remixes it for the 21st century in a novel hierarchy that instantly feels classically comforting and yet, ephemeral in its eternal romance.

THE COMPOSITION

“The fine arts have always been important to us as a brand,” says Rahmé, who is continuously inspired by NYC’s world-class galleries, museums, and the latest exhibitions they host. “Not a day goes by that you can’t experience amazing art in New York.”

Bond No.9 collaborated with a true artist—Senior Perfumer Vincent Schaller of DSM-Firmenich—to reinvent white musk for today’s discerning fragrance connoisseur. Number One is first and foremost sensual: the top notes open with fresh Italian bergamot and the dreamy, intoxicating florals of ylang ylang. Residing in the very heart is white musk, soft and animalic, always formidable yet infinitely wearable. Flanked by sultry Bulgarian rose, sexy jasmine petals, and warm Brazilian tonka bean, this center epitomizes elegance. For the bottom notes, decadent Madagascar vanilla, spicy Indonesian patchouli, and creamy cashmere wood make for an artful combination that elevates white musk into a true masterpiece.

THE PACKAGING

How to house Bond Number One’s distinctly artistic temperament? A rich purple—the hue a painter creates by mixing fiery red and deep blue—accented with decorative croc motif and gold lettering seems fitting for this royally layered scent.

SUSTAINABILITY

Responsible packaging is a pillar of Bond No. 9, and we strive to offer consumers the option to choose without having to compromise on luxury.

Bond No. 9’s iconic Silhouette Bottle is 100% recyclable and uses 50% recycled cullet during the manufacturing process.

AVAILABILITY

Bond Number One arrives on counter September 15, 2024, and will be sold at Bond No. 9 New York and Miami Boutiques, Bloomingdales  and select Neiman Marcus stores, Harrods UK, Selfridges UK and www.bondno9.com

Eau de parfum, 100 ml, $460.

The Estée Lauder Companies has announced that Akhil Shrivastava has been appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, succeeding Tracey T. Travis, whose intention to retire was announced on July 11, 2024. He will report to William P. Lauder, Executive Chairman, and Fabrizio Freda, President and Chief Executive Officer, consistent with the reporting structure for Tracey.

Shrivastava will assume his new role effective November 1, 2024. Tracey will remain at the Company until her retirement on June 30, 2025 to support a seamless transition.

“With over 25 years of extensive financial and leadership experience, Akhil is an exceptional and capable leader whose financial and strategic expertise and insights have been important in supporting the Company over the past several years, and he will be instrumental in driving forward our strategic direction and decisions,” said Fabrizio Freda. “I look forward to partnering with Akhil as we continue to rebuild stronger, more sustainable profitability and sales growth acceleration across the business.”

In his new role as Chief Financial Office, Shrivastava will be responsible for the Company’s Global Finance, Accounting, Tax, Treasury, Investor Relations and New Business Development organizations. He will lead ELC’s Global Finance & Strategy (F&S) organization and will continue to cultivate and strengthen the tremendously talented Finance & Strategy Team, continuing to imbue agility and consumer-focus across the organization to drive sustainable value creation, governance, and strategic business objectives and priorities for the long-term.

Since joining ELC in 2015, Shrivastava has held several senior finance roles within the Company. He was recently named ELC’s Senior Vice President, Corporate Controller, a role that oversees Corporate Accounting and Financial Planning & Analysis, the International and Online Finance organizations, Pricing and Value Chain Finance, serving on both the Finance & Strategy Leadership Team and Executive Leadership Team. He also oversees the Operational Excellence pillar as part of the Profit Recovery and Growth Plan focused on driving strong inventory, cash, and cost improvements for the Company. Prior to his current role, he was Senior Vice President, Treasurer, where he was responsible for core Treasury functions, the Enterprise Risk Program, Real Estate, and oversight of the Company’s retirement funds.

Shrivastava will serve as a member of several of ELC’s senior management leadership groups including the Executive Leadership Team, Investment Development Committee, Fiduciary Investment Committee, and Corporate Risk Management Committee. In some cases, his membership will continue, and, in others, he will be a new member.

“Akhil has demonstrated his capabilities as a transformational, visionary, and collaborative leader who combines finance and strategy with an appreciation for the creativity within our business and our brands with consumers at the heart,” said William P. Lauder. “He also has a keen ability to cultivate high-performing teams and organizations and will continue to strengthen the tremendously talented Finance & Strategy organization, which will be instrumental in continuing to drive our strategic business objectives and priorities for the long-term.”

Shrivastava first joined ELC in 2015 as Vice President, Global Finance & Strategy for the Estée Lauder brand and was then appointed to the role of Senior Vice President, Global Finance & Strategy for Jane Hertzmark Hudis’ Brand Cluster in January 2019, where he provided strategic leadership and financial guidance while maximizing business and transformational opportunities across the brand cluster. Specifically, he helped allocate resources to support and promote the best growth opportunities from a consumer, sub-category, geography, and channel perspective.

He has also served as a valued member of many key enterprise initiatives at the Company, providing strategic financial direction for projects which include transforming ELC’s planning processes and capabilities to support the end-to-end business from consumer demand to delivery.

“With its leading portfolio of iconic brands, extensive global reach, and impressively talented people, I am honored to lead the Global Finance team,” said Shrivastava. “I look forward to helping to advance the Company’s multiple engines of growth to rebuild stronger, more sustainable profitability and support sales growth acceleration across brands, product categories, and regions while evolving the business for the future.”

Before joining The Estée Lauder Companies, Shrivastava spent eighteen years at Procter & Gamble, where he served in several finance and leadership roles across Asia, North America, and the global businesses, including Finance Director for Gillette, North America.

He is a graduate of Engineering College in Rewa, India and has a Master’s Degree in Finance and Control from Delhi University.
